Help finding my son a new car

My sons 2000 Ford Explorer front wheel completely froze up and destroyed the brakes and there is a problem with the rear axle too. Repair cost is over $1000 and I'm not paying that. Time to look at a new car for him.

Who were the resident dealers on this site again?

Here are the cars he is looking at. Any opinions would be great as I have had it with car shopping these last few years.

Have heard nothing but good about the more recent Focus and the smaller Fiesta.

A dealership in Lawrence is going to bring a Focus to Topeka for us to look at. The salesman lives in Topeka. Pretty kind of him. It is the third link in the OP.

EDIT

I wonder if the front grill appearance allows insurance to slightly raise rates on it

Used Subaru's might be something in this range if he is looking for something more interesting but likely at the sacrifice of insurance costs for his age.

As others have said a newer car that started as a more practical/less expensive car new is probably the best route. Also agree with what others have said that a more budget economy car can be made more interesting with a manual as well. Newer car may have some warranty and loan will be cheaper/easier as well.

And they're not w/o their issues. No car is repair bill proof no matter how much Car and Driver wants you to believe that.

The first Honda i ever owned was an Accord with 80K on it. Two weeks after i took it off the lot, my wheel fell off from a bad CV Axle.

What I found with insurance while looking for a car for my son is that it isn't the type of car that matters but who typically buys it. A Civic is very expensive to insure while a CR-V isn't because kids are more likely to buy a Civic. Pretty much any "cheap" car - Civic, Focus, Sentras, etc - are more likely to be expensive to insure when compared to cars more typically owned by adults.

The cheapest cars to insure are those typically owned by older people like Cadillac and Buick. That said, the car we settled on - a 2000 Impreza - wasn't too bad, though no insurance for a 17 year old male can ever be called cheap.

I love my focus guru. In fact, my wife is driving mine while it's in the shop, while I am stuck with a Mazda2 which makes my focus seem like a luxury vehicle. I do encourage you though, grab the 5 speed manual if you can find one. The Dual Clutch Autos will almost all enevitably have to have the clutch replaced. Mine did at 26,000 miles, or just hope it's still under warranty.

well, looks like he will have to look at older cars. His insurance rates for the 2012 Focus would be over $400 per month. JFC Even liability only is at $250 per month.

Thats highway robbery no matter how you look at it.

Ouch.

That's brutal. Through which carrier?

I remember my first car.....the major insurance companies wanted $300 a month for full coverage....i believe i was 19 at the time.

I was able to find a smaller company, i think it was Viking or Infiniti insurance, and it dropped to around $200.
