No Charges in Wal-Mart BB Gun Shooting

Watch the video. Dude's just shopping for pet food, swinging a BB gun, and minding his own business. Then, BAM.

Apparently the Dayton PD trains their officers to murder people.

http://www.whio.com/videos/news/walm...ptures/vCtB6Z/

Quote:
A special grand jury called to review evidence in the fatal shooting of John Crawford III, killed by police in an Ohio Walmart while carrying a BB gun from store's shelves, decided today that no officers involved in the shooting will be indicted.

Surveillance video from Crawford's shooting—previously unavailable to the public—shows Crawford walking around the store while talking on the phone, with the BB gun at his side or on his shoulder. The disturbing video then shows an officer rushing toward Crawford with his gun drawn before shooting him.

Though the special grand jury reportedly considered charging the officers with murder, reckless homicide, or negligent homicide, WHIO reports the jury ultimately decided not to indict the officers involved in the shooting, finding their actions were justified.

Vince Pope, attorney for the officers involved in the shooting, released a statement following the decision:

"I believe the grand jury's decision, it's absolutely the right decision, that the officers acted well within their training."

Derrick Foward, president of the Dayton Unit NAACP, also released a statement:

"The Special Grand Jury in Greene County made the wrong decision. It's a sad day in the history of Dayton."

Foward added the NAACP will call for a complete investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice.

The pictures of people carrying guns into stores amaze me. There so much that's wrong with that.

First, just because something is legal doesn't mean it's a good idea to do it. I suspect it's legal for me to wear a KKK robe out on the street, but it's a stupid thing to do it. You're just inviting trouble, and that's what these people are doing.

Second, it's stupid to associate yourself visually with crazy mass murderers. You may believe that you're perfectly sane as you stand there with your rifle. But guess what? There are people who have done exactly what you're doing, and then they started shooting innocent people. If I'm a bystander, it's in my very strong interest to assume that you're an insane mass murderer and act accordingly. The potential downside of ignoring you is high, and the downside of either fleeing or fighting is low.

Third, you damage the credibility of your whole philosophical position by doing dumb stunts like this. If your goal is "show the public" that people can carry guns and not shoot people, see Point #2 above. It's never going to work, and it just makes people less comfortable. If I have a gun, I'm comfortable. If the stranger 10 feet away has a gun, I'm uncomfortable. That's how guns work.

I didn't sentence anyone to death. My issue is a guy calling in a complaint to the police wasn't at fault. He called the police.

There's a simple level of common sense involved here. Guy is waving the thing around erratically. The weapon looks real.

Should the police have used better judgement, maybe, but I can't say that judging by the video. For all I know they told him to get his ass down several times. I don't know.

just watch the video. He picked the bb/pellet gun up in the store and strolls around talking on his cellphone. He never aims it at anyone. He never threatens anyone. Just shopping. And from what I can see the police just start firing without announcing their presence.

I would love to hear your opinion of this video:

I'm sure you have some insane reason to excuse the cop's actions.

Who was justifying legal force? I was simply pointing out that calling a BB gun "essentially a toy" was incorrect.

And to make matters worse, Ohio is an Open Carry state. So if you have a permit and walk into a walmart with a gun on you i guess that gives cops the right to shoot first ask questions after you're dead.

How anyone can deem this as acceptable is insane.

He was at fault for blatantly lying. I have no issue with him making the call.

Where does it matter where he got it from? If it was ascertained that it was something off their shelf prior to the fact then that is an issue. The fact that it wasn't in any kind of packaging (as is every bb gun on the shelf at walmart here) probably didn't help his obvious intention to portray it as an airsoft gun.

How do you know what his intention was?

If i saw a BB gun sitting there on the shelf, i would probably be prone to picking it up and checking it out. I might even stand in the aisle while talking on the phone while holding it. Does that justify me being shot?

That's all this guy did. It's bullshit.

If it were a REAL gun and he were legally carrying it into a store, is it a ok for a cop to just come up and shoot him?

I don't know how i could have ever gotten such a crazy idea like that. Clearly your lying about the dead man bringing the gun into the store and your feeble "maybe the cops told him to get down" comment could never have lead me to that conclusion.

Here is the video of him being killed:

To me, it looks like they shot him on sight.
