Adrian Peterson Indicted

Reckless/negligent injury to a child. Indicted.

This league may not be able to sustain too many more of these black eyes. It's a mess.

I know that's anecdotal, but that's kinda the point. We see a lot more now than people could back then. Does that mean there are more bad kids? I don't think so. In fact, and I know this is a worn out tune, but parents of kids in the 60's thought the next generation was going to be a mess just like their parents did. Why do you think this is finally the generation to **** it all up?

Also, saying what would have gotten you thrown out of school back then doesn't at all apply to the discussion. You're talking about school policy, not parental forms of discipline.
If corporal punishment is not working with your kids then you need to look at other alternatives.

If non corporal punishment is not working with your kids maybe you need to look at the alternative.

I never insinuated just beat the kids when they screw up and eventually it will work. Some kids need whooped. Do it early enough and the need often goes away.

Its not the whole reason for today's issues, its just an example of the change in society.

Do I think Adrian Peterson should be beating his children with tree branches? Uhm, no. I have 3 nephews and a niece and I can't imagine my sisters or their husbands doing that to them...and they wouldn't, because, well they are rational.

But, ya know...I wasn't beaten with a switch when I was a kid. Was Adrian Peterson? Seems like it. Should he have probably weeded that out of his parenting style? Yep. Do I think he'll ever do it again now? No, I don't. Do I think he made a terrible mistake? Sure. Do I think he needs to sit out a football season because of it? No.

This shit is super hilarious to me. He played the entire preseason and the Vikings certainly knew of this upcoming possibility of an indictment. It becomes public? DEACTIVATED. It's a ****ing joke.
All of this.

So before everyone keeps throwing out the "its not 1964 or 1980" stuff you may want to ask if things are truly better as far as moral compass, respect etc...are all concerned.

I don't see it.
Interesting. Almost every school district has a policy of zero tolerance towards the students. There are literally a hundred threads you dig up on this site that state "school district suspends kid for...."

My class - in a parochial school no less - had tudents who smeared shit on the walls. Students who beat and intimidated other students. Students that showed outright disrespect for teachers.

No different than today.

Still not sold on this. Higher visibility of shitty kids, yes. Shittier kids? Haven't seen it. Even if I had, I would need to see some actual data before making that claim that has been made every generation. Also, more pleases and thank yous (while I do value politeness) is not the same as a higher moral standard.

No you aren't crazy but a little unclear. Are you implying that I think there is no difference? I was responding to SNR being outraged but not.

Didn't happen in my school. Yea you had a few buttholes but very little disruptive behavior.

Of course I went to school in rural Kansas where switching was common.

Great. So now we see why anecdotal evidence proves nothing, right?

Your daughter's school is no more the standard for society than WilliamTheIrish's was however many years ago.

Well you do realize that doesn't dispute my argument that we have become more liberal as a society over time and so these issues are getting worse.

Aside from advancements in technology and race relations, what exactly do you find better from a societal standpoint from 30-40 years ago?

Is it teen pregnancy? Underage drinking, or drug abuse? Divorce rate? Are those better or worse?

Key Trends Over Time
Childbearing. The rate of teen childbearing in the United States has fallen steeply since the late 1950s, from an all time high of 96 births per 1,000 women aged 15-19 in 1957 to an all time low of 49 in 2000 (see chart below). Birthrates fell steadily throughout the 1960s and 1970s; they were fairly steady in the early 1980s and then rose sharply between 1988 and 1991 before declining throughout the 1990s. In recent years, this downward trend has occurred among teens of all ages and races.
