http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap300...lease-ray-rice

"The Baltimore Ravens announced the release of running back Ray Rice Monday.

A video emerged Monday of Rice punching his now-wife in an elevator.

Around the NFL will have more on this story soon."

You know very well that battered women often take a stance to not press charges and that is what often allows spousal abuse to continue to exist in those relationships.

In some states it doesn't matter what the spouse wants if there is evidence of abuse.

He was probably their meal ticket.

Who knows what he can offer them now... he better watch his buns considering his fiancé's family cares about her.

Maybe I just haven't followed this all that closely, but why exactly would the NFL want to "ignore" the video?

It's not like they were protecting Peyton or some face of the league.

Yeah, I really don't understand what was new about that. Unless people thought his wife was just like narcoleptic or something.

Oklahoma is one of those states. I've been to court a few times where the spouse didn't want to cooperate.

Someone on the Ravens probably leaked the video to TMZ, they are the real winners in this.

They ask law enforcement for the video and the cops said 'no'.

Unlike TMZ, the NFL wasn't going to bribe a casino official for a tape that they really didn't want to see anyway. Plausible deniability.

tape comes out, Rice is gone
tape never comes out, Rice plays

I don't think is they were protecting Rice, I think they displayed horrible judgement.

It doesn't matter, we will never know.

On one hand I feel like if you don't get pressed with criminal charges the NFL shouldn't intervene, but on the other I can understand Goodell's perspective. The NFL is a brand and they have every right to protect it.

Either way it looks like Rice's career is pretty much over.

Countdown until this sensitive soul issues a tearful apology, and seeks counseling, and enrolls in anger management, and asks for privacy to deal with this family matter?

"Press charges" just means "I will help you prosecute him for the crime", usually by testifying in court.

Usually you do need help in cases like this, but if you don't need the victim to cooperate with testimony (eg you have everything on tape), then what the victim wants should not be relevant. He should be prosecuted even if she doesn't want them to move forward.

Every state is one of those states.
If there is evidence of a crime, it is up to the prosector's office to prosecute. Often, they won't have the necessary evidence unless they have a cooperative spouse or other victim, but they don't need the victim's permission to prosecute.
