All that matters (or should) to Chiefs fans is cap numbers.

My only question is how does this impact Houston and Smith. I don't begin to understand salary cap jargon.

He has 9.9M left on his current deal. 18M more gives us.... 28 Million or an average of 7M per year. |

Alex is probably getting underpaid in the last year of his contract, but he VERBALLY said to reporters and to fans that he didn't believe it would be right to demand an extension before he even played a down on his new team.
It's not a huge deal for the Chiefs. Keep negotiations open, and if an extension can be reached, then do it. Otherwise, make use of the franchise tag, provided that Justin Houston has received his extension before the time comes. That gives the Chiefs two years of negotiation time with Alex, and he only gets slightly underpaid for one of those years. And like Charles, if he wants more money now, he should make sure the extension happens sooner rather than later. |

Jamaal Charles is great. Even his holdouts are fast.
