Malaysia Airlines loses contact with plane carrying 239 people

Malaysia Airlines says it has lost contact with a plane with 239 aboard enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

The airline said in a statement early Saturday it was attempting to locate the Boeing 777 after it lost contact with Subang Air Traffic Control at 2:40 a.m. It was scheduled to land in Beijing at 6:30 a.m.

China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported the plane was lost in airspace controlled by Vietnam, and did not make contact with Chinese air traffic controllers.

The plane is carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members. The airline said it is working with authorities to locate the plane.

Boeing said on its Twitter account it is monitoring the situation, and "our thoughts are with everyone on board."

Ah. So they picked up one signal for 2 hours and 20 minutes, then lost it as they turned, then picked up a second signal for 13 minutes. That second signal was at a slightly different frequency, which makes them think that it could have been a different signal from a second black box. However, they said that there could be other forces that might change the perceived frequency.

Two. One records the aircraft flight data and the other one records the cockpit audio.

The search operation is in a race against time as the flight recorders' batteries are due to run out, meaning a signal would no longer be emitted.

A Chinese search vessel, Haixun 01, also said it briefly heard signals over the weekend in a different search area. These signals are also being investigated.

I honestly don't see how you would find Rain Man's post to be racist - pings, readings, signals, to me they're just different words meaning the same thing.
