Cap should be tight for Chiefs again in '15
For those wondering why the Kansas City Chiefs weren't more aggressive in free agency this year, one reason is that philosophically, the Chiefs would prefer to build their roster through the draft. Another is that they won't have a ton of salary cap room in 2015 to handle big contracts given out now.
The Chiefs have about $125.5 million of salary cap commitments for their 39 players under contract for 2015. The salary limit this year is about $133 million per team and could increase to more than $140 million next year. But remember a few things. First, their 2015 salary load includes just 39 players. They'll need to add a few more in order to field a team. Second, quarterback Alex Smith and linebacker Justin Houston are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents in 2015 and the Chiefs will need significant salary cap room in order to sign them. Last, this 2015 total doesn't include so-called dead money for players they release this year who won't be with them next year. So this adds up to a salary cap situation that should be tight again in 2015. Wide receiver Dwayne Bowe will have another hefty cap number in 2015 at $14 million. If the Chiefs released Bowe before next season, he would still cost them $10.5 million against their cap, so don't look for the Chiefs to cut Bowe next year merely to reap the cost savings. The Chiefs could realize a cap savings of $9 million next year if they release linebacker Tamba Hali, whose cap number in 2015 is almost $12 million. They would save $7 million against their 2015 cap by releasing cornerback Brandon Flowers. He has a 2015 cap number of $11.5 million. Other possible places to cut next year include at backup quarterback. If the Chiefs believe Tyler Bray is ready next year to be the top backup, they could save $3.8 million against their 2015 cap by releasing Chase Daniel. The 2015 release of wide receiver Donnie Avery would immediately shave $3.55 million from Kansas City's salary cap. http://espn.go.com/blog/kansas-city-...kc-again-in-15 |

Right about now is when we'll hear more vocal calls for calm in Chiefs Kingdom. If Clark says anything, he'll tell folks he's got (another) new crew in, and they have a sure-fire way of building a winner - just come on out and watch! The team will leave you so amazed that you won't even be left watching the cheerleaders!
AR and JD start in 13, build with unproven talent in 14 (while the SB-attending Donks spend like a whore), and we already know that 15 will be just as tight, and the Donks will again spend like a whore... How much of the caps space goes to the first family? CHIEFS!!!!!!!!!! |

Gist of the article is that we are 8 or 15 under the cap. Let's assume it's low. 133 mil. with a restructure of Hali and flowers, you could probably save ten mill. Cutting them saves you even more. He acknowledges that we can easily cut guys like Daniel, Fasano, Avery, and devito and even Sean Smith which frees up at least fifteen to 20 mill. Which means he acknowledges that simple moves will give us about 33m in cap space.
He assumes that rounding out our roster and berry, Houston, and Alex smith's contracts are going to eat up 33mil in space. That's silly. We will round out the roster through two years of drafts and by being relentless in bargain free agency depth. |

Hali is a one trick pony. Plus he's slowing down. Flowers was good when he was younger, but losing a half a step really shows now on him. He's decent still, but cutting them 2 isnt that big a deal if you draft well.

It's up to you if you want to take a big haircut to cut guys like Hali or flowers now, or if you want to overpay them in the future, just to save money today. Or if you want to wait one year and have complete leverage on the restructure. We should use creative accounting on new contracts, not to shuffle around contracts already in place.
A good idea of creative accounting is to sign Smith, Houston, and berry to huge signing bonus deal with a small 2015 salary and a massive 2016 roster bonus. Problem solved. And no wasted dead money. |

And as long as this is what Clark sees, that 44 may as wll be 54. Until that changes, and some other things too, neither will "next year", it's been a wildly successful business model for the Hunts to change now. I mean, why risk their "easy" (do nothing for it) pure profit with the mere potential of winning a super bowl coming at the cost of those profits? I'd say 88 yuears, but Mr. NBA has determined the NFL won't last that long.

Whatever! This is TOTAL BULL SHIT!
The Saints had NO $$$$ yet they FOUND a way to sign an IMPACT FA. Those teams that want to win find a way to do things and build upon success. The Chiefs don't seem to do that and only seem to spend $$$ when they need to reel the fans back in. The issue is the Hunts DONT like to hand out large signing bonuses which is usually a key element in signing FA's. The Broncos SUCKED ASS when Cassel & Co won the division 3 short years ago. They were supposed to be in CAP HELL after signing Manning - yet EVERY YEAR they are a major player in Free Agency. Shoot they signed 4 MAJOR FA's this season and STILL have MORE $$$ than the Chiefs and the Chiefs let 5 starters WALK! I think the Broncos are they doing "something" right. Just goes to show you the different philosophy of an organization that does what it takes to win and I HATE having to admit that.
