Tipping for services...

Not like restaurant tipping for the waiter, but tipping gardeners, postman, house cleaners, etc. Do you do it, and generally how much?

This is the first year we've paid a guy to handle our lawn. It's a business, but he's the only guy doing it. What's appropriate? Is cash preferred, or is a personal gift (wine, homemade goodies, or something) better?

I just refuse to add a tip to that. If it's an explicit delivery charge, then the customer shouldn't be expected to pay twice. Otherwise, it's just double dipping and no doubt a huge profit center for the employer . (For the local pizza places that usually don't add a delivery charge, I still tip.) At first I felt guilty for "stiffing" the guy, but then I just decided to explain to him the reason why. Sorry, but not going to pay $16 for a pizza advertised at $10.
Then go pick it up yourself. Nobody is forcing you to order delivery. There's nothing the driver can do about a corporate policy, so you ARE screwing him and should feel guilty.

You know a lot of those big chains don't give any of that delivery fee to the drivers so they're getting stuffed a bunch, I'd bet.

That's really shitty on your part though. You do realize that the guy literally spent money on gas and wear and tear to bring your ass your food? Next time get off your ass and pick it up yourself.

I end of year tip my yard guys. It makes up for the one or two times a year I forget to pick up the dog crap before yard day! I give them 40 bucks each, 2 guys, one is the owner. Mail people are different all the time or I would tip them.

I kinda disagree here. It is double-dipping on the customer. The pizza joint is instituting a delivery fee. If they're not giving any of that to the employee either through higher wages or just simply a percentage, then it's the pizza joint that's stiffing the employee, not the customer.

It's a fee. You were made aware of the fee before ordering, and that it does not go to the driver.

No doubt, but it's not much different than tipping a server.

You know going into that most servers get paid less than minimum wage and that it's expected that your tip will push them into decent wage territory so you do it. But why shouldn't the restaurant pay them a decent wage like they do cooks?

I do agree that it's a ****ed up business practice on the chain's part though.

It's not the customer's responsibility if the driver is being screwed by greedy corporate policies, so he has nothing to feel guilty of. There's plenty the driver can do about bad corporate policy. Like work somewhere else.

Expecting the customer to take responsibility for the corporation's bad policy isn't going to make for better corporate policy in the future.

That's what it boils down to.

You know that the fee is included before you agree to finalize your order placement and you know that either most or all of it doesn't go to the driver. However shitty the business practice on the chain's part, you're ultimately a dickhead if you stiff the guy and give him some shitty ass speech as if you care to absolve yourself of some blame.

Pick the shit up if you don't want to pay that extra $5 or $6 or whatever.
