I can't remember where I was when the accident happened I think I was at work. I do remember I was just pulling in my driveway when it was announced that he had passed.
I also know that it has cemented the Buckle UP policy when anybody gets in my car. |

I had just woke up and logged on the computer when I saw it. I was very shaken & upset.
The day he died, I was sitting in my living room watching TV, when it came across on ESPN. My wife was pregnant at the time, but refused to let me name my new son Derrick. But when my youngest was born in 2005, she gave in and I named him Derrick. |

I don't remember what I was doing when I heard about the accident, but I do remember being selfish about it and thinking about how much this would hurt the Chiefs organization. I was also angry about him not wearing a seat belt and speeding. Just such a senseless accident.
His death was a pretty somber day for me. It was the day I put my CHIEFS vanity license plate on my car. I had it for couple of days and just hadn't had the heart to put it on my car after his accident.

I came home from school and my Dad had said "Did you hear what happened to that Chiefs player who got in the car accident?". I said "No" and went online to ESPN.com and saw the front page. Derrick Thomas was that Chief.
I didn't cry, but I was very sad that entire day and watched ESPN that entire night to get more information. Such a shame.... Welcome to the Hall of Fame, DT! |

I had just come home from work and turned on ESPN while I was taking off my combat boots. I had my left boot off and was starting to untie my right when the re-capped the story. I think I finally took the right boot off 15 or 20 minutes later.

My wife and I were in the ER after we had gotten sideswiped. Fortunately we were fine. To this day we still find it hard to believe that we were in an accident the same time DT was.

I don't think so...if I recall correctly, he was in Florida as some specialized hospital for spinal trauma injuries...that was where he had the pulmonary embolism that killed him.
