Supreme Court strikes down federal anti-sports gambling law

https://www.cnn.com/2018/05/14/polit...urt/index.html

Quote:
Washington (CNN)The Supreme Court cleared the way on Monday for states to legalize sports betting, striking down a 1992 federal law that had prohibited most states from authorizing sports betting.

The court said the federal law violated constitutional principles limiting the federal government from controlling state policy. It unconstitutionally required states to prohibit sports betting under their own laws.

This story is breaking and will be updated.
I'm betting the over on the Chiefs as soon as possible.

Can you imagine how much the local casinos would make if Missouri legalizes it. I'd rather spend Sunday at the casino instead of at the game. March Madness gets alot more fun as well.

Kansas is looking to make it legal.

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/05/14/us-s...s-betting.html

Quote:
Industry analysts have said that dozens of states might legalize sports betting if they are not barred from doing so by the federal law. Seven states – Connecticut, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Iowa, New York and West Virginia – have laws prepared to make sports betting legal in the event of Monday's ruling. Thirteen more states – California, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Michigan, Oklahoma, Rhode Island and South Carolina – have plans or proposals to consider legalizing sports betting.

Missouri introduced 3 bills in April. One of those includes online sports betting.

This ruling should open up a whole new discussion of government over reach. I am sick of seeing the federal government forcing states to enact laws that they can't. Same reason why every state has seatbelt laws. Because the federal government forced them to enact those laws.

That's one of the benefits of having a conservative court I'd assume.

Do you not agree with seatbelt laws? Seems like an odd example to use.

as I was reading it, I thought he was headed towards federal govt essentially mandating drinking age as his example. Didn’t put it in this perspective though.

I thought about that actually, and DWI laws. They we're also forced on the states. And, although they are good laws to have in the books, the government was still overstepping their powers in forcing the states to act. I didn't include them because I didn't want to come across wrong as being against DWI laws. But the way that those laws we're enacted, I believe, is unconstitutional.

No. I absolutely do not agree with seatbelt laws. They do not have the right to force people to wear seatbelts. It's nobody's business.
