Let’s talk about Willie Gay and this defense post-bye

It was a unique offseason, and starting as a rookie would be tough.

But do we really need to see anything else to know that Gay is already our best linebacker? He is the only one who jumps off the screen, and has made a nice play or two in every game the past three weeks.

Even if he is a little behind the other guys mentally, his speed and physicality more than makes up for it. I would rather take a chance on his talent to make some game changing plays rather than suffer this death by a thousand paper cuts that the likes of Ben Niemann and Damien Wilson seem to open us to.

If you believe a guy like Nate Taylor, we should see more of Willie here moving forward. He suggests that their plan for this season was to gradually grow his role until it becomes basically full time. What better week to inject him as a starter than here entering the bye?

I think it could make a big difference for the defense. Really hoping he becomes the WILL — Hitchens can still make all of the calls at MIKE...

I agree.

Gay has started popping and flashing in every game. His pass defense looks REALLY good right now.

He's ready to take that next step and get more playing time.

Yip. Gay is going to be a baller.

Neimann is good on obvious passing 3rd downs and ST’s, but nothing else.

Has anyone made a gay joke yet? You know, about his name? Because his last name is Gay. And his first name is Willie? And you put them together and it makes it sound kind of funny?

I agree. He has been making more plays and he has the speed and has tackled well.

Hopefully he studies hard during the bye week and we start seeing more and more of him.

I saw two good plays by him negated by Jones (hands to the face) and I believe Ward holding or some such.

But yes he is looking great so far.

It’s amazing the difference you see watching him compared to guys like Wilson and Hitchens. Both those guys seem to have really fallen off a cliff this year. They were never world beaters obviously but they have been utter garbage this season. Can’t recall a single play I’ve seen either of them make. Don’t even get me started on Niemann.

Gay needs to be on the field more than any LB going forward.

Gay had two big stops Sunday, but both were wiped out by penalties.

His speed is going to pay big dividends in the postseason.
