Potential free agent signings

I think we can narrow our potential free agent signings this off-season to guys coming off rookie deals in the 24,25,26 year old range, based on the past few years

That’s the sweet spot

So who’s in that area?

It is 100% clear that Orlando should not be in the Chiefs' long-term plans at LT. It's bordering on pathetic that he got a Pro Bowl nod this year, which worries me when we start thinking about the Chiefs offering him a contract again.

The trade and pay route that you've been in favor of may pay more immediate dividends but will bite you in the ass hard more often than not in the long term. I'm more in favor of this when the requirement is a day 3 pick OR the pick investment is not comparable to what it would take to just go up and get an elite player in the draft.

If you could trade a 1st for Laremy Tunsil, I'd be on board. If you have to trade two 1sts and a 3rd, I'd be more inclined to go up to 10 and get the elite LT in the draft because of the long-term savings on the cap. Now, there is less of a guarantee that he's elite than what you're getting in Tunsil but that's the risk of the trade-off for cap space.

What makes Paris Johnson, Jr. so attractive is his athleticism and his smarts. He lacks experience and he's subsequently lacking technique at LT. Given his athletic gifts and intelligence though, you are confident in him growing into an elite LT in a year or two. If Tennessee is the likely landing spot, then 10 is where you need to get to.

I'd also have no problems going up for Skoronski. The guy is a virtual carbon copy of Rashawn Slater and just might actually be a bit better in pass pro. He's not your traditional LT but he's good. Slater hasn't had a problem.

I'd move up for Anton Harrison as well. I see him as more like Eric Fisher. He's going to be an elite pass protector if he can get stronger to handle that bull rush.

All of these guys scream being immediately on par with what you're getting from OBj.

If you're waiting around until the end of one, I'm super high on Matt Bergeron. I mean, really high. The nice thing about him is you can plug him in on either side as he's played both extremely well. Syracuse guys don't get hype, I get it, but this guy is nails. Maybe the league will view him as a 2nd round guy, I don't know. I don't but I've been wrong before and am never scared to admit it.
Really great summary of the options out there.

There are teams for which Orlando Brown would be really excellent. The Chiefs are not one of them. I was optimistic after last season, but he has not built on it and taken a step back. Oh well.

For me, I'm with you on all these options. I think there are guys who just fit so much better with what KC wants to do, they're better options for next year (especially if they're athletic movers. Thuney can be a big support for them on inside moves).

I think, at least right now, this OT class is underrated.

The most attractive thing about this option, or at least one of the most attractive, is the ability to upgrade the OL overall at a lower salary cap cost than Brown by himself.

Say the dream, best-case scenario plays out. You convince Jawaan Taylor to come to KC on a big RT contract (4/72? 40M guaranteed?), you get a cheap LT on a rookie deal who fits KC's style better than Brown, and you pick up some form of draft assets in return for Brown. Even if the best you can get for tagging and trading Brown is a 3rd round pick, it's great for the long-term prospects of the team.

Of course, Foskey and Ojuilari are nearly always there, too, as well as Andre Carter-so that's a tough call, in my opinion.

If that's how reality breaks down, I like our options. It certainly helps to have a few legit first round QB's in the mix.
Yeah, they aren't "terrible" per se but they are usually off a round one way or the other on several players early on. I like to play with them too. Haven't yet this year though. It's not a bad reference.

I like when the bigger players start releasing some boards after the Shrine and Senior Bowls.

I think Harrison goes by 20, maybe he slips to the upper 20's but I can't see him being there at 30. Bergeron is most probable to be there at 30 but his Senior Bowl performance could be huge for his stock, or not.

Foskey... I'd say absolutely no way he's there at 30. Back-to-back 10 sack years for the Irish? Good speed, good power. No way. He's a better prospect than Jermaine Johnson and George Karlaftis coming out. I'd say he comes in by 20 or so and if there's a run on the top 3 early then I could see 15. If he were there, I'd have a really hard time passing.

Ojulari seems right to be available. He's a 2nd round guy at best IMO. I don't know if I have a ton of interest in him for the Chiefs. I think he's best served as a 3-4 OLB to be honest and maybe one of those teams takes him earlier. I think he'll take some development.

What are people's opinions on Kaleb McGary? Think he may be a decent option for right tackle.

We got a stud CB and an ascendant DE in the 20-30 range.

I don’t see why we couldn’t get a serviceable LT in that range.
