Ballbuster Video: 1 store left

Blockbuster down to 1: Bend, OR. Down from 4,500 at its peak. Milennials will never know of this horrid place - a more wretched hive of scum and villainy you'll never see.

Anyone here sad to see their demise? Anyone remember "late fees" returning The Untouchables?

I saw that this was happening. I spent a lot of money in my local blockbuster a couple of decades ago. The place didn't seem so bad to me.

During law school, the Blockbuster was right next to Racanellis with the best pizza around, and both were a very pleasant walk down The Loop from my front door.

Two slices of Italian Beef or Veggie Special and two new releases was a great way to unwind on a quiet Saturday night.

They once had the opportunity to purchase Netflix and passed.

That's incredible.

Also the millennials time frame is actually quite big so I am technically one myself. I certainly remember Blockbuster. There was almost something magical about going and finding the video or game you knew for sure would not be there. Plucking that tab off the velcro was a magical moment.

Or seeing that they are all sold out of what you want on the shelf, but checking the returns and finding it.

Didn't they also have a shot at partnering up with Red Box as well?

It's so much worse than that.

The could have bought Netflix for around 50 million and Blockbuster laughed Hastings out of the room. On top of that they had evidence that their business model was going down the tubes as early as 1997. Flash forward to 2004 and to compete with Netflix's mail service they were going to have to cut all late fees 200 million, and invest in digital infrastructure to stream which was going to cost another 200 million...and that's when Carl Ichan stepped in and utterly ruined the company.

I guess the Russell Crowe underwear from Gladiator couldn’t save the Alaska blockbusters.

Count me in as someone who loved blockbuster. But I grew up in a smaller town. I loved running into people I knew, judging them on their movie choices, and the thrill of not always getting the movie you wanted. Movies and books have become more convenient but I get kind of bummed that so many social experiences are being stripped away from us. Same reason I was sad to see toys r us go away.

They never rented porn or NC17 movies.

In fact, they had so much pull at one time, a few NC17 flicks would come out with ‘The Blockbuster cut’ so they would rent it in their stores.

We had a place here that had their porn rentals in a large binder book, the cases were all flattened and in plasic protectors and one would walk in and ask for,"The Book"

At least that's what I heard.

My town was small enough that it didn’t have a blockbuster.
