RAPOPORT: Steve Spagnuolo, Dennis Allen, John Pagano names to watch at DC

Just heard on NFL Total Access.... FWIW. https://twitter.com/rapsheet/status/...864004097?s=21

Allen, the Saints DC, is a free agent for those who may read that and wonder.

I think that is definitely something to consider. Kpass, Speaks, perhaps Ragland. Could all of these guys excel in a 4-3 scheme?

Saints defense became respectable under Dennis Allen. I would not mind him at all.

well, you might have someone who can hold the edge and not be blocked by a WR.

Sacks, while exciting and important are not the entirety of defensive worth, just like Peters and his INT's. It's what gets guys paid though.

Ford is incredibly one dimensional. He's a huge liability in the run game; if you just run at him it's easy money.

We led the NFL in sacks- how'd that work out for us? Well, we made some big plays, but were horribly unsound and could NOT stop the run to save our lives. So MAYBE there's more to defense than sack totals. Just a thought.

It really doesn't matter who we bring in.

If they have some knowledge of how to disguise coverages and blitzes they are a massive upgrade.

What? Are you serious? There have been plenty of NFL DEs in that size range. How big was Jared Allen?

Let's be honest.

We led the league in sacks because the offense got out to big leads, forcing other teams to become one-dimensional.

When Ford has no other responsibility other than to rush the QB, he's a beast.

At any other time, he's a huge liability.

Bob Sutton just didn't motivate players. Look at Bienemy, that guy has FIRE. We just need some FIRE on defense.

Having the extra beef up front in a 4 man line makes things easier for LB'ers as they're not taking on Guards as much.

Smaller, faster LB'ers that can cover in particular would do better with a little shielding from an extra DL up front.

Hitchens played really well in Dallas 4-3. In our 3-4, he looked real tentative.

O'Daniel is kinda light for a 3-4 LB. for a 4-3 cover backer he might be just fine.

Tamba Hali was a DE in a 4-3, and then an OLB in a 3-4. It's not a crazy stretch to think that Houston could do it too. And you wouldn't ever see him in coverage again. You just put him at RDE and send him against the LT every play.

Ford has no position in a 4-3 scheme other than pass rush specialist. Which, really, is all he is as he's such a liability against the run. I really think it's unwise to give him a long term deal due to health issues and one dimensionality. His one specialty is speed rush. That's just not worth near $20m a year, which is likely what it'd cost.

I'm fine with Spags or even Rex Ryan. Both have a good history against Brady. Rex will hold players accountable and gets the most out of his players, which is one thing this defense needs.

What I don't want is an in house hire.

Kpass and Speaks have the size to play DE. Jones and Nnadi could be a real solid DT combo, Williams as short yardage and rotational depth.

Maybe look for an older vet with a little left in the tank to man a DE spot and mentor on a short deal.

I think you can replace pieces and still have depth if they want to switch to a 4-3 and that for some of the players we have, it might be a better fit. So I think it's six of one, half dozen of the other.

Dee Ford would have to beef way up to even be close to 265. He's maybe 250. As speed is his entire game, beefing up is a bad idea.

EDIT- Ford is listed at 243.

WAAAAAAY too light to play DE.

I think DoD would be a good WLB, my problem beyond the line (I ford is not big enough) is who plays MLB?

I don’t think that’s were hitchens excels he is a WLB, then you have to find someone to attack the LoS at SLB which we don’t have.

Kpass and Speaks is not who I want to rely on.
