Lol how quickly fans forget.
Berry was tagged his first year. And then there was a long standoff as Berry let clearly know he wouldn't play if tagged for a 2nd year and it seemed like both parties wouldn't budge. I remember Dorsey looked like he was standing his ground but it just seems like there is not much to do to make the star players accept significantly less than all the riches they think they are worth. I remember a ton of fans were saying: pay him! I was never a fan of how much Berri got but it was really a case of either you pay him what he wanted or you lose your superstar. I know tons of fans would have been pissed at Dorsey if he had not given a new contract to Berri so I guess in the end he was going to be criticized no matter what. |

Tyreek Hill is another player whom I feel will be holding out for that huge contract and won't budge at all. It must be said though that right now he is giving the Chiefs a lot for pennies.

I thought the term was too long given his injury history. He deserved top dollar at his position, but it is a position that is becoming de-valued like running back. Not a lot of foresight. |

If you look at the general moves made around that time I may be wrong saying this but speculation wise I've always felt that John Dorsey had no intention of keeping Eric Berry and was going to walk away and then Clark Hunt stepped in....I think that situation is one of several that led to Dorsey being fired.

I mean honestly I can see why Dorsey would feel that way. Most GM's think safety is a position you don't spend big dollars on. Factor in on top of that that Berry wanted so much and he had, had cancer on top of having another serious injury early in his career. Also the Chiefs had played pretty much fine without him...
I honestly don't fault that logic and it led to Maclin being cut and some of the cap issues. If he had no intention of keeping Berry that does change some things with the cap. |

I don’t blame Hunt a bit if he forced the Berry signing... they had little to no choice. Letting that guy go could have imploded the entire locker room and culture.
Beat cancer, become an all-pro again, get sent packing. Oh and he’s the emotional leader of the team. That’s not a message you wanna send to your locker room. |

The Chiefs were in a lose-lose situation at that point. Overpay for Berry or let him walk and deal with the aftermath of letting a cancer survivor, and the heart of your team, leave.
