This is probably the wrong place but.... has anyone done the Big Brother/Little Sist
Given all that's going on in the ****ed up world I usually volunteer to help homeless. Now that I'm in my middle 30s and kidless I figured my time could be better spent helping someone less fortunate. I have free time and figured the kid would have a blast and hopefully I'd have a positive impact.

I suppose it's hit and miss. I know 5 people who have volunteered for it, and 4 people said they hated it; 1 of them was my wife .
I mean, it's a good thing, but I would imagine it could be difficult if you're not ready for it. however, one of my friends has been doing it for the past 3 years probably, and seeing the FB posts with his wife and their 'little' the past 3 years or so has been pretty remarkable; from the beginning, until now. Their little is probably 14 or 15ish now, and just looking at pictures has been eye opening. Kid was a on the verge of being a delinquent, but now they post all sorts of stuff where the kid is involved in all sorts of school activities (not sports), getting great grades etc, exposing the kid to all sorts of local and regional history/culture etc. It's pretty bad ass.

I did it about 5 years ago. My kids were all grown and moved out of the house and I thought I should try to do something positive for the community and youth.
It was a struggle. My Little Brother had the attention span of a gnat, always had his mobile device and didn't enjoy any other activity except looking at his phone. I ask his Mom if it was possible to limit the mobile phone during our visits but it didn't stick. Eventually it just sort of fizzled out. |

Its a noble cause. It takes TONS of patience. Don't expect any respect or results in the short term. This may sound harsh, but if your not willing to stick it out for the very long term find another volunteer opportunity. Many of these kids have already had a number of adults who show up talks about caring then leave when their own needs aren't met. It has to be all about the kids and being there for them.
I have a friend who enjoys it. It has taken 2 years for his current "little" to warm up to him and actually engage in the relationship and process. Trust doesn't come easy. |

That would be a very good thing to do for your fellow man helping to be a role in a young boys life. Give it a try you'll regret it later if you don't.
Hopefully it all works out for both of you. |

He was a nice, well meaning guy but looking back he seemed to become frustrated at the lack of progress we were making in forming a bond It didn’t last more than a few months, but I guess I just had trouble connecting with a perfect stranger... it’s a very noble thing to attempt, but is surely very tough to pull off |

I did it several years ago. I definitely felt like the kid wasn't that interested in me as much as he was interested in having me spend money on him. I don't know... all kids are selfish to some extent, so maybe I made too much out of it. Whatever. I know I was definitely relieved when I moved across the country for school and had an excuse to stop.

Kudos to those who do it. As for me, I cannot imagine an endeavor for which I am less qualified and capable.
Maybe if there was a big cat/little cat program where I could spend time with an impressionable cat, I could do it.

Not exactly the same, but in my younger days, before the birth of my second child, I used to volunteer to spend time with special needs kids. Those kids really touched my heart and they were so appreciative of you spending time with them. They can by a handful at times, but overall, it was very rewarding.

Best buddy did it. Spent a couple years. The (single) mom was always dropping him off sometimes unannounced and my buddy quickly learned she signed up the boy for her own free babysitting.
Kid was ok, played video games with him here and there. Then impregnated his GF in high school. Never heard what happened after. |

I don't think you should do it billay, unless you've got yourself figured out first. If you're still having drinking or depression problems, pick a volunteer activity that's less long term and that you're more likely to see satisfactory completion of your efforts sooner.
