Chiefs Offseason Planet Evaluation: Spencer Ware

Given his injury this year, I wasn't sure whether to include Spencer or not, but what the heck. He was initially going to be a big player in the offense before going down, and some of the evaluation focuses on a player's future.

So tell me what you think about Spencer.

Spencer had no stats this year due to the injury.

For reference, in 2016 Ware had 14 starts and appeared in 14 games. He had 921 yards rushing (4.3 ypc) with 3 TDs, and added 447 yards receiving (13.5 ypr) and 2 TDs. He fumbled 4 times. (Man, that's a really good receiving average, but four fumbles makes me cringe.)

Assuming he's healthy, he's going to be a huge asset. The RB group got perilously thin at times this year, which probably contributed to Kareem's mid season slump. If Ware can get 10 or so touches a game and be reasonably productive, it could really help boost the running game by taking some of the burden off of Kareem, which in turn would take some pressure off of our MVP QUARTERBACK Pat Mahomes.

I mentioned this in the West thread, but I think Ware is a perfect candidate to take over West's role. He's got good hands, he's a bigger blocker, and he's also a threat to run effectively.

Slim chance Ware sees 10 touches when our feature back was lucky to see 15.

This is a really good point.

I wonder if they'll run more in Mahomes' first year. You'd think they would, but Andy likes to do non-obvious things.

No grade available at this time, but do have very high hopes for a very physical 1-2 punch from Kareem and Spencer

I'm hoping the Chiefs can pick up another good young back in the draft.

I'd take Josh Adams but he's going to go higher than we'll want to take a RB at.

Do we really need one? It seems like Kareem and Spencer should give us all we need there, and we've depth with West and Spil-no, wait, they just cut Spiller again. But still, that's three RBs and then you can add Akeem in there for depth.

If we had a bunch of picks like last year, sure. But with as few picks as we have this year, I don't think you can use a pick on a RB when there is already good depth there already under contract.

Ware is still a worthy RB1 that will make for an amazing RB2 behind Hunt.

He's still fairly young and cheap. The Chiefs can certainly focus less on this position. West can be cut or traded to save nearly 2 mil, but really.. KC is not throwing all that much into RB, cost-wise. If they keep him, he's an excellent RB3.
