gun question

Ok, I'm in the market for an AK. Don't bother with the AR vs AK thing, cuz I'm eventually going to have both. I don't want to break the bank, and I'm confused by all the different designations such as SKS, SRA, PAP, O-PAP, etc. all for guns that are all 7.62/39mm guns. Any help would be great for a gun that fits in a budget under $700.

Let er rip

Nope. Watch the videos. One of them shows the differences between the VZ and the AK.

I bought mine at about the same time. If I had known what would take place just a few years later I'd have bought, like, five of them at that price.

Just a thought - I recently purchased a DPMS AR-10 for $800. I know - I know...DPMS is not the "hot" brand, but I have been placing groups in the three inch range at 450 yards with little effort. Actually a damn fine rifle for the money.

It came completely MIL spec. The only thing I've changed was to put a Nickel Boron BCG from Palmetto State - $200.

Just a thought.

Another thought...Cabelas routinely sells the Mosin Nagants for around $125. You will be hard pressed to find a better long range rifle cheaper than that (with the exception of the SKS).

Snoots turn their nose up at DPMS, but their bull barrels are amazing. My father has a 24" .308 that shoots 1/2" MOA, and I have a 16" 5.56 that shoots 1/2", and when the day is right it's a 2" gun at 500. Built for under $500.

Their triggers, on the other hand, are complete shit.

Well, I've narrowed it down to the C39 V2 AK or LZEN's recommendation for the VZ 58.
I've read a shit ton of professional reviews and opinions and I'll lean to the latter if I can find one that's reasonable. They seem hard to come by. In fact that is my only concern would be parts.

Cool....I was same way when I bought my AR. Have fun with it.

Asking the question as an ignorant Brit how easy is it to get hold of a Piece in the US?

I hear stories about buying them in Walmart and some banks offering them as a joining gift.

Is this true?

In Montana, Alaska, Wyoming and Texas you can get hand guns, ammo and beer from vending machines. Just swipe your EBT card and you got yourself a fully automatic Smith & Wesson revolver and Schlitz malt liquor.

Here in Kansas, you can buy ghost guns at any Quik Trip or 7-Eleven. They even come with .30-caliber clips!

Yeah, but you poor bastards still have a ban on multi-automatic-round-weapons. We don't!

I have never seen a bank offer them as a gift. If you buy a gun in a retail store, you have to pass a background check. Yes, Walmart sells rifles. Still, they won't sell you one if you've been convicted of a felony or domestic violence and a number of other things.

I'll second that on the triggers. Although, I must have gotten lucky when I bought my 10 - really smooth pull, I haven't measured it yet, but it "seems" to be in the 5-7 pound range which, for a larger caliber weapon isn't bad.

My Remington .308 tops out at an even 3 pound pull. But it was ( with all the crap) twice the cost.
