*** Official 2017 Royals Offseason Repository ***

The reign is over. Time to begin the quest for the next one.

Interesting offseason opens for the Royals. Will they go all in for one last shot with this crew? Will they re-tool for 2018 and beyond? Will Dayton Moore actually decrease payroll this time?

Trades, free agent signings, rumors, plans, proposals... dump 'em all here, for this is... the offseason repository!

Royals Top Prospects, 2017

This is a list that’s going to seem a little bleak initially, as Raul Mondesi got enough ABs to age out of the prospect rankings (just barely – at 135 ABs, he is not rookie eligible). But that said, I like the talent and feel like this is a system that will actually be underrated by the prospect services.

Spoiler!

6. Perez(R) - C
7. DH
8. Merrifield(R) - 2B
9. Escobar(R) - SS

Looking at this lineup makes me wish they had signed Holliday or Beltran because that could be a formidable lineup with a good DH.

I'd bet anything a Paulo Orlando/Brandon Moss platoon would outdo Beltran or Holliday

Beltran and Holliday are much MUCH better pure hitters than Brandon Moss.

Moss is the definition of an all or nothing hitter. He hits everything in the air so his BABIP will always suck and his contact rates are absymal so his BA will always suck on top of it. Now, there are periods of time where he can be a very dangerous hitter but not in the 'guy gets hot and kills everything' sort of way.

When Moss is 'hot', he just doesn't miss mistake pitches. You still have to actually throw him a mistake, but at least when he's dialed in, he actually hits it. It still means that even a hot Brandon Moss gets carved up by quality pitching (which is usually enough to put him back in a funk). Holliday and Beltran, OTOH, can hit ANYBODY'S pitch when they're hot. Holliday will probably have a hole above his hands for the rest of his career because he's just gotten a little bit old and his swing has never been particularly short, but a lot of guys have a hole above their hands and pitchers are afraid to challenge them there because if they miss by three inches, the ball gets yanked 400 feet. Beltran has preternaturally quick wrists; the kind you see in a handful of players each decade. I'd sell my soul to have Carlos Beltran's swing (from the left side; his swing from the right is a bit disjointed) and because of that swing, he can still hit quality pitching.

I absolutely hated Brandon Moss. BM, as I affectionately referred to our very own little trade-deadline bowel movement, could be counted on to do absolutely nothing for a 2 month period of time pretty much every season. He couldn't field any position credibly and if you needed someone to take a quality AB in a late game situation...well you should probably look elsewhere because it wouldn't be Brandon Moss.

He's a garbage time player; the living embodiment of the empty-offense slugger. He'd be worth a 1 yr, $7 million deal because I'm pretty sure ball boys get $3 million if they hit the market these days, but beyond that, I'm not convinced he's even worth a roster spot. I'm positive there are dozens of 'organizational' minor league veterans that teams see as AAA filler who would outperform Brandon Moss. He's ****ing awful.

Royals fans have scarred memories of him almost singlehandedly roasting us in the 2014 WC game.

Cmon bro, he's a 105 wRC+ hitter last year. That's close to Kendrys 109, and would've been 2nd on our team. (We don't hit for shit). Before that it was 93, 123, 137, 160. That's substantial.

Will he suck next year? Possibly. His career looks a lot like Rob Deer. So give him the same 350 AB vs RH you did, when he hit 25 bombs vs them.

What did Holliday or Beltran do better than him? Hit singles? K a bit less? They sures hell don't run or field any better or hit the long ball. And chicks DIG the long ball

Take quality ABs against good pitching. That's still the thing that most of our metrics do a poor job of accounting for that you can only get a feel for by watching someone play. Brandon Moss may have ended up with some tolerable numbers but he got them by wrecking bad pitching and flailing against anything quality.

If you want him to fill in some mid-season innings and hit some bombs that don't matter - have at it. But the guy's a shit hitter. He's one of those fat assholes in slow pitch softball that stands behind the back line of the box, takes a full stride as the ball is being released and swings as hard as he goddamn can just in case he hits it. He has no real approach other than "well if I swing really hard a lot, maybe some guys will walk me and other guys will throw it directly into my swing path".

When the Cardinals desperately needed Brandon Moss in September during the midst of their last-gasp playoff push - hit hit .099. I shit you not - the ****ing guy couldn't manage a 100 batting average in September last year. His OPS+ for the month was SIX. ****ing six.

You will hate Brandon Moss. Oh you can attempt to talk yourself into him all you want but I'm telling you right now - you will ****ing loathe that clown. He's Adam Dunn if you gouged one of Dunn's eyes out. He's among the most flawed players in the entire game right now.

Moss is a player where the numbers don't add up to the production. That's where the eye test comes in.

I know you win with your defense.

And with Morales and Hosmer, you have nowhere to hide Brandon Moss's glove.

You'll give back anything you get offensively (via hollow bombs) through defensive misplays.

You don't want the guy on your club, especially not if you have to play him in the OF.

Fair 'nuff.

He might be an adequate DH replacement but only on a part-time basis. They'd have to monitor how they use him very closely.

I don't want him. I saw enough of him in St. Louis. Even though he did homer in both games I saw him in person at. And he did a monster shot against the Royals. But no, don't want Moss at all.

And just think the Cardinals gave up a similar prospect to the Indians for Moss to what the Royals gave up for Zobrist.
