*** Official 2017 Royals Offseason Repository ***

The reign is over. Time to begin the quest for the next one.

Interesting offseason opens for the Royals. Will they go all in for one last shot with this crew? Will they re-tool for 2018 and beyond? Will Dayton Moore actually decrease payroll this time?

Trades, free agent signings, rumors, plans, proposals... dump 'em all here, for this is... the offseason repository!

Royals Top Prospects, 2017

This is a list that’s going to seem a little bleak initially, as Raul Mondesi got enough ABs to age out of the prospect rankings (just barely – at 135 ABs, he is not rookie eligible). But that said, I like the talent and feel like this is a system that will actually be underrated by the prospect services.

Spoiler!

Speaking of that, here's an outside-the-box idea that sprung up while checking out MLB Trade rumors...

The Mets are desperate to unload Jay Bruce. They want relief help. They aren't willing to take on Bruce's salary to dump him for prospects.

I'd propose swapping Joakim Soria - who, while he blew several games last year, still stacks up favorably in overall results and yearly salary with most of the guys remaining on the free agent market - for Bruce.

Now, that means taking on additional 2017 payroll - Bruce is making $13 million, vs. $8 million for Soria. But you still come out $5 million ahead over the next two years + Soria's buyout.

Plus, the Royals have trimmed some payroll in swapping Davis for Bruce.

It would reduce some of KC's flexibility with the DH - basically, one of Cain, Bruce, Gordon or Soler would be DHing every day, and you'd need more Cain in CF... but it sure might help the offense to add a LH bat who has been very good against RHP in his career - .872 OPS last season, .817 over his career.

I don't love Bruce by himself, but 400 ABs of .800+ OPS against righthanders is intriguing when paired with dumping Soria's contract.

I'm guessing we'd need to send more than Joakim, though anything to get rid of him is a step in the right direction.

Can somebody get GMDM's e-mail address to Duncan?

Dammit, I check this thread on break and see Pants quoting DI about Bruce-for-Soria and got excited until I read it was a hypothetical. What a dick tease!

That Bruce hypothetical also makes two assumptions:

1) The Mets REALLY ARE desperate to dump Bruce
2) The Royals are seriously entertaining offers for Dyson.

If you keep Jarrod, even though it offers less power, you probably get more value from 400 ABs of Dyson + his defense and baserunning compared to Bruce.

If you go to Bruce, you have 648 games to split between LF, RF, CF, and DH

Gordon gets 150 (if healthy - preferably with 10 at DH)
Cain gets 140 (if healthy - preferably with 20 at DH)
Soler gets 150 (if healthy)

That leaves 208 games. If you're trying to give 120-130 starts to Bruce, which you'd have to to make this trade, does that give you enough games to also rest Perez and Moustakas AND get Cain 25-30 1/2 games off at DH?

Could get messy.

Say Duncan is now Dayton and we get Bruce.

Potential lineup:
Gordon
Moose
Cain
Bruce
Hosmer
Perez
Soler
Esky
Whitfield

would probably look more like this:

v RHP:

Merrifield (he's their best option at this point unless they put Gordon back there, and I don't believe they will)
Moustakas
Cain
Hosmer (Bruce isn't bumping him)
Perez/Soler
Gordon
Perez/Soler
Bruce
Escobar

v LHP
Merrifield
Moustakas/Cuthbert
Cain
Hosmer
Perez/Soler
Gordon
Perez/Soler
Orlando
Escobar

Certainly makes the lineup deeper, though.

Yeah, if Cain plays 130+ games this year and performs at 2014-16 levels (.300/.360/.450), he's going to get a very comparable deal. Maybe only four years, but guarantees around $17 million a year.

He seems like a pretty safe bet to get $50 million guaranteed, if he's healthy this year.

NTC clause doesn't matter much for a player on what is likely his last contract.

If the Cards are scuffling and a contender wants Fowler, he'll waive it. The only thing a NTC does is provides some security for the player in the knowledge that they won't walk in one day and be told they've been sent to Tampa Bay.

It means much more for the player than it does the team, at least when it comes to veteran position players. Now giving them to relievers is stupid (still can't believe we gave Cecil one) because those kinds of players can be pumped up and traded somewhere with a reduced role. A reliever wouldn't want that, obviously, so he would enact his NTC.

But if you're trading for someone like Fowler, you're starting him. And besides - I suspect many players would be just fine getting out of Matheny's clubhouse. If approached, I bet he'd waive it.

No question; health was always the only real issue with him.

Swap some of Fowler's OBP for Cain's defense and you otherwise have very similar players. Depends on what a team's looking for as to which is likely to be more valuable. And Fowler being a switch hitter and being fairly durable has value as well.

I think what you see here is another ceiling vs. floor argument. Cain has genuine stud upside because his defensive value is top shelf. But Fowler's floor is higher due to his durability, switch hitting skills and the fact that OBP tends to age better than defense.
