NBA's Jontay Porter under investigation for betting irregularities

Is this about to become a thing? Seems like a dangerous precedent where part time role players can affect sporting events in the name of gambling.

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/...betting-issues

Quote:
At issue are prop bets involving Porter from games on Jan. 26 and March 20, multiple sources told ESPN. An NBA spokesman told ESPN that the league is "looking into it."

In the game on Jan. 26 against the LA Clippers, there was increased betting interest on the under for Porter props, which for the night were set at around 5.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists. There was also an over/under for Porter's made 3-pointers, which was 0.5.

That night, Porter played just four minutes before leaving the game because of what the Raptors said was a re-aggravation of an eye injury he'd suffered four days earlier in a game against the Memphis Grizzlies. He did not score against the Clippers, had three rebounds and one assist, and did not attempt a 3, meaning the under hit on all of the props.

The next day, as part of a daily report to users on betting results, DraftKings Sportsbook reported that the under on Porter's 3-pointers was the biggest money winner for bettors of any NBA player props from games that evening.

Porter played 19 minutes two days later and scored 12 points with seven rebounds and three assists.

On March 20, in a game against the Sacramento Kings, Porter played just three minutes before leaving the game because of what the Raptors said was an illness and did not return. He did not score, attempted and missed one shot, and had two rebounds.

Sportsbooks had his over/unders set at around 7.5 points and 5.5 rebounds.

The next day, DraftKings SportsBooks reported to its users that Porter's prop bets were the No. 1 moneymaker from the night in the NBA.

So what is the data on the full game he played? Did the prop bets come in the same or were they significantly less on that game? Let's see the whole picture.

The biggest issue is that there were people trying to place unusually large bets on those games that he happened to leave early on. Just him leaving early both games isn't a big deal. An unusual number of bets on them peaks interest.

This likely happens a lot more than anybody thinks, but you’d have to be an idiot to get caught. Appears that Porter is.

Unfortunately for Porter, he was raised by parents who did a combination of religious-based home schooling and sending him to unaffiliated Christian schools or basketball academies.

He and Michael and all the rest were horribly sheltered from the world and entered adulthood woefully behind socially.

He’s a naive kid and it doesn’t take much to exploit one.

Far different story told here:

High school career
Much like his older brother Michael, Jontay started out his high school career playing under the Father Tolton Regional Catholic High School in their home town of Columbia, Missouri. In his freshman year, he averaged 11.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per game for Father Tolton before being a key figure in helping them win the Missouri Class 3 State Championship for the first time during his sophomore season. In his junior year of high school, Jontay and Michael, along with their younger brother Coban, would move to Seattle, Washington after his father earned an assistant coaching job at the University of Washington for their basketball team. During Jontay and Michael's time at Nathan Hale High School, the brothers would be coached by former NBA All-Star Brandon Roy, who would help lead the squad to a perfect 29–0 record and the Washington Class 3A State Championship. Under the coaching of Roy, Porter would average a double-double of 14.3 points and 13.6 rebounds per game for Nathan Hale High School, thus earning a name for himself alongside his older brother.
Porter was previously a recruit under the Class of 2018, with him being ranked as high as 11th overall by ESPN at one point.[1] However, after his father was hired as an assistant coach for the University of Missouri, his older brother changed his commitment from the University of Washington to his hometown University of Missouri, and Brandon Roy changed coaching positions from Nathan Hale to Garfield High School, Jontay would reclassify himself into the Class of 2017 alongside his brother, joining his family out at the University of Missouri. Between his time preparing for his transfer from high school into college, Porter would gain two more inches to his body, thus allowing him to play as a power forward, with center being a viable possibility as well.

All the kids homeschooled until high school, at which point they went to high school to play sports.

Father Tolton is accredited now. I thought it was not an accredited private institution when the Porters enrolled - I was thinking of Christian Fellowship, possibly (that’s where Ricky Kreklow first went).

But while they were at Nathan Hale, it was pretty well publicized they were full school members - they were home schooling most of the time and participating in sports.

As someone who was home schooled under similar circumstances (religion, control) and interacted heavily with dozens of additional home school families in my area through “support groups” I have yet to see someone who didn’t end up extremely sheltered and behind the curve socially - myself included.

Not even talking about the academic side of things. Different ball of wax.

My point was that these were kids who were never really normal students and they have been behind socially the whole way. There is naivety present with all the Porters, including the girls.

I would be surprised. The thing is with the NFL, there are much easier ways to win money than intentionally ruining your stats like porter did. You know the game plan going in, so it’s far easier to just text your friend and say “boom/bust WR 2 on our team is going to have a huge day because we saw something on tape” or “we are going to be throwing more than usual so take the over on completions and the under for RB yards”. That way you aren’t betting on the same guy over and over and you naturally are betting people who draw more action, like the star wr or qb. You also don’t have to worry about hurting your own performance and the outcome for the team. The nba is much more chaotic and unpredictable on any given night so you can’t really do this, and thus is much more likely to have someone do something as an individual actor.

The number one predictor of conspiring to throw a game for the purpose of sports betting gains is being homeschooled so I’m not surprised.

I laughed out loud at the gym.

Not quite what I was saying. Saying he’s a naive kid and talking about contributing things to that.
