Let’s talk about Willie Gay and this defense post-bye

It was a unique offseason, and starting as a rookie would be tough.

But do we really need to see anything else to know that Gay is already our best linebacker? He is the only one who jumps off the screen, and has made a nice play or two in every game the past three weeks.

Even if he is a little behind the other guys mentally, his speed and physicality more than makes up for it. I would rather take a chance on his talent to make some game changing plays rather than suffer this death by a thousand paper cuts that the likes of Ben Niemann and Damien Wilson seem to open us to.

If you believe a guy like Nate Taylor, we should see more of Willie here moving forward. He suggests that their plan for this season was to gradually grow his role until it becomes basically full time. What better week to inject him as a starter than here entering the bye?

I think it could make a big difference for the defense. Really hoping he becomes the WILL — Hitchens can still make all of the calls at MIKE...

He's not playing more because the coaches have personnel packages and so far, he obviously hasn't shown enough in practice to warrant him playing in more packages.

That's not the way it works. Spags requires a lot from his LB's. Gay will be on the field more when he's ready.

Gay’s ability to mirror a freakin’ wide receiver in his zone coverage played a huge role in Clark collecting a sack on this play.

This is the area of his game that you wanted to probably see before being comfortable with him playing, understanding space and route concepts, playing it physical but not too handsy...

I don’t know when he’s going to take over but I think he is really going to be a name the talking heads latch onto by Jan.
I agree.

They’ve been giving him bigger and bigger roles as time passes and they trust him more.

The way they are bringing him along is going to really help his long term outlook and his ability to impact games down the stretch and in the postseason.

Man, he's shown some really impressive flashes in the last 3 games. He still finds himself out of position sometimes. But for a rookie, I really like what I see so far. Might be another really good signing. Give him time though, NFL LB is generally a considerable adjustment even from college ball with regards to the speed of the game. He's looking good though.

Patrick Queen is a legit DROTY candidate and he still misses a few plays a game.

He's not that far ahead of Gay right now in terms of development and he's playing 80% plus snaps per game now.

Gay will get there, I'm confident of that.

Best way to learn is to do it. Fail or succeed. It's time to throw him out there more.

Not true at all. Especially not in a team sport where 11 guys all have their own job to do.

Sorry, but you can only "learn" so much on the bench. Ultimate on the job training in the NFL.

When the guy in front of you can't physically do it like you can, it's time to play more.

I would have liked to have seen him more earlier, but it is what it is. However, it's also obvious that he is constantly in place to make a play when he's on the field. It's now more than halfway through the season, and we're on our bye week. Now's the time to let him loose. Niemann should never see another defensive snap after that pathetic attempt on the 4th and 14.

Let's take it easy on Patrick Queen, ask any Ravens fans how he's looked this year. He's been straight terrible more often than not. I bet he starts to figure it out but he's nowhere near DROTY level.

They LEARN in practice, not in-game.

When he's capable of doing what they ask in practice, he'll play. It's that simple.

Willie is already taking the reigns and playing a lot through mid season. I think he’ll be ready to either start full time or play more than 50% of the snaps consistently by the playoffs.
