Take care of yourself guys

In the last year I have had 6 friends die. 4 in their 50s, one in his late 40s and one in his early 60s. All appeared to be in great shape. Makes you think a little about your own mortality. Wish I had retired a couple years back when I had the chance. Seems so young to be kicking it. Still others have had major health issues and cannot enjoy any quality of life. What ever happened to the new 50 is the old 40?

Stress, man.

And so much of it is borrowed; worrying about shit we shouldn't.

And I'm certainly in no position to chastise anyone for it; I've been able to shrug stuff off for years but in the last couple it's gotten to me as well; sleep and basic physical fitness has declined on account of it. It's just basic provider/family stuff that I know SHOULDN'T matter because no matter what happens, we'll make things work. But it doesn't mean that I don't work myself up over how awful it would be to not be able overspend on my kids' Christmas if we have to shutter the business and I have to go get a job working for the state or something at reduced pay. Petty, mindless horseshit that means nothing in the grand scheme yet I still wake up with an unsettled stomach and a headache because I sleep like shit over trite nonsense.

People are resilient and families almost shockingly so. Yet we still manage to convince ourselves otherwise and worry that the worst is just around the corner. Politics taking an oversized role in the day to day noise worsens that, as does just the generally toxic atmosphere looming over social media. But if we can just get ourselves every now and again to remember that we're probably gonna get through whatever comes our way, maybe a little worse for wear or a little less flush than we'd hoped - but alive and ready to adjust - we'd all be better off.

That's a great take. I stress more than I should. I just need to sell my business in the near future and just focus on my health, son and family. I have enough money now but walking away from another liquidity event would just be stupid. Hope it is sooner rather than later even if it's less.

Well earlier got here, I'm now 68, I did quit smoking 12 years ago at age 58. I had to use Chantax to quit, it's a great drug. No nicotine like gum or patches, it works on the sensors in the brain that crave nicotine.

When I was young I never went to the doctor, always felt good, except when I was hungover, I also drank about as much as I smoked, they go hand-in-hand. Now, I only drink wine on one night a week, on Friday's I play music. Since I quit smoking I've lost my appetite to drink, or drink as much.

I've got a few problems but I'm actually doing good. Six months after I quit smoking my doctor sent me for a stress EKG and I found out there was a blockage. I had a stent put in my heart May 2007. I have to take a blood thinner pill the rest of my life, no big deal, but you do bleed very easily.

When I moved to this retirement community about 8 years ago, I immediately signed up for the softball league. I played for five years, that's three 14 games seasons a year. I had to give it up after five years, I couldn't run anymore. I went to a pulmonary doctor and he said I had COPD, and I now have 3 different inhalers I use. One's a rescue and the two I take at various times of the day.

Last year my cat-scan showed I had some problems with my lymph-nodes. I went to the hospital and they removed 3 bumps from my left arm pit. Now I have non-hodgkins lymphoma, although I'm not displaying anymore symptoms, it's something they check every six months.

I also have diabetes II, I take a pill for that, but the biggest problem is I have diabetic neuropathy in my feet. They can hurt like hell at times, lately they been hurting a lot, mostly at night when I try to sleep. There is medication, Gabapentin, but it works by creating electrical charges in the brain. Unfortunately I have the side-effect that you can sleep walk. The last couple of times I was walking on the bed and fell off and hit my head, so now I can't even take that medication.

I could go on, but my point is, when you're young, take care of yourself. I go to the gym 3 days a week, I play golf, softball is now out, but if I had done all this stuff when I was younger, I wouldn't have these problems today, as well as I should of never smoked.
people don’t realize how much they will regret smoking cigarettes until it’s too late. Smoked for 10 years myself. Quit 33 years ago.

had no idea what that pill was, had to google. woah, man that’s dangerous shit. Going to risk your life to take drugs, my as we’ll be one that at least gets you high.

At 31 I was in great shape. It creeps up on ya. One thing I’ve learned that no diet or pill works in the long term. The only thing that works is what everyone already knows...... Eat better food, less bad food, get off the couch and exercise.

Why is life expectancy decreasing? I was hoping by the time I got real old we were at 100 years, or they can at least put my brain in a vat and I can live on with the help of a computer.

https://www.cnn.com/2017/12/21/healt...udy/index.html

Life expectancy in the United States has dropped again following last year's decline, which marked the first downturn in more than two decades.

On average, Americans can now expect to live 78.6 years, a statistically significant drop of 0.1 year, according to a report on 2016 data published Thursday by the National Center for Health Statistics. Women can now expect to live a full five years longer than men: 81.1 years vs. 76.1 years.

The last time the agency recorded a multiyear drop was in 1962 and 1963.

"I still don't think you can call it a trend, because you really need more than two data points to call something a trend," said Bob Anderson, chief of the mortality statistics branch at the National Center for Health Statistics, part of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "But it's certainly concerning to see this two years in a row."

Anderson said he is particularly concerned about drug overdose deaths, most of which are opioid-related."We have data for almost half of 2017 at this point. It's still quite provisional, but it suggests that we're in for another increase" in drug-related deaths, he said. "If we're not careful, we could end up with declining life expectancy for three years in a row, which we haven't seen since the Spanish flu, 100 years ago."

The 10 leading causes of death remain unchanged and now account for 74.1% of all deaths in the United States, according to the report. Age-adjusted death rates decreased for seven of the top 10 leading causes of death: heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory disease, stroke, diabetes, influenza and pneumonia, and kidney disease. The rates increased for unintentional injuries, Alzheimer's disease and suicide.

Unintentional injuries include accidental drug overdoses, which were the official cause of 63,600 deaths last year."It just keeps going up and up and appears to be accelerating," Anderson said. Opioids now kill more people than breast cancer. Opioids now kill more people than breast cancer
"In the past, those increases have been more than completely offset by declines in cardiovascular mortality," such as heart disease and stroke, he said. "What's happened in recent years, since about 2010 or so, is a substantial slowdown in the rate of decline for cardiovascular mortality. It seems to be leveling off to some extent, and as a result, the drug overdose deaths are more prominent in the overall picture of mortality."
A country's infant mortality rate (the number of births compared with the number of deaths of children under age 1) "is generally regarded as a good indicator of the overall health of a population," according to the report. In the United States, this rate "changed from 589.5 infant deaths per 100,000 live births in 2015 to 587.0 in 2016, but this change was not statistically significant."

The biggest takeaway from the report is that heart disease and cancer are still far and away the top killers of both men and women in the United States. The good news is that there are three things you can do to drastically reduce your risk of developing both: eat right, exercise and don't smoke.
It sounds like simple advice, but as anyone who has ever tried knows, it is easier said than done.
