A Patrick Mahomes II poll - The long and the short of it.

I think we can all agree that Patrick Mahomes II is the greatest quarterback ever. But something that boggles my mind is that I think a lot of his best plays are short throws or runs.

Don't get me wrong. A lot of his best plays are also medium and long throws. I'm pretty sure he's also had some great kickoff returns and field goals, and who can forget his Miracle on Ice in 1980 and winning four gold medals in Berlin in 1936?

But my point is that some of his most jaw-dropping plays, in my opinion, are passes where the ball doesn't actually travel very far or doesn't get thrown at all. I think in part the reason is that I've seen other great quarterbacks make fantastic long throws on occasion, not with the frequency or clutchness that Patrick Mahomes II does, but it happens occasionally.

But the twirling touchdown to Clyde against the Bucs? The flip to McKinnon against the broncos? The short shuttle to Kelce against the Texans in the playoffs when four defenders were in the space? The two-pointer against the broncos where he moved around in the pocket for nearly an entire quarter of game clock before hitting it? I've never seen that by other quarterbacks, not even occasionally.

So my question to you, dear reader, regards the prevalence of short passes or runs in the all-time Top Ten Mahomes plays. Let's define a short pass as one that was completed less than ten yards downfield, not considering total air yards.

How many of the top ten plays (so far) have been short passes or runs?

Rules note: If you cannot narrow down a top ten plays, you can use the top 100 or 1000 plays and scale it down.

Side note: At some point we're going to have a tournament to identify the top Mahomes play of all time (so far). Maybe after his tenth year or so. Or maybe we'll do it every five years, which would make it due .... hmmm, now.

I am unfamilar with this term. Is this related to those flowers that bloom every 100 years?

Here’s 3 examples to Kelce. I think these are among the best

I'm sure I'm missing a million good plays, but off the top of my head, I've got (in no particular order)

1. Twirling Buccaneers touchdown pass to Clyde
2. Downfield flick to McKinnon against the broncos
3. The Texan two-yarder to Kelce in the playoffs.
4. 4th down 48 yarder to Hill against the Ravens.
5. Jet Chip Wasp.
6. Kissing the pylon run against the Seahawks.
7. The Hill long touchdown against the Bills in the 13-second game.
8. The Colts scramble-right TD pass that made Collinsworth mad.
9. The 49ers scramble touchdown pass in 2018 that put the league on notice.
10. The Titans AFC Championship game run.

I'm showing 50 percent of the highlights being short passes or runs.

I retain full right to adjust this list, by the way. This is just me thinking about Patrick Mahomes II for 30 seconds.

If a short pass is a pass of less than 20 yards, I'd say all but 2: WASP and the clincher to Watkins vs Tennessee in the AFCCG.

His TD run in Superbowl LIV is sneaky good. Probably doesn't make any top 10 list but just remember how huge it was at the time and the little fake move he put on the defense to make it happen was awesome.

Ugh. The call by Nantz and the crowd roar makes this a million times better but even in a vacuum I could watch this play on an infinite loop.

Hell yes. IMO, that was the single most emotion-evoking play in team history. The play that officially killed a 50 year drought.

This will always be one of my favorites of his. The degree of difficulty, total absence of window, and the complete disrespect to even attempt that throw.

What other QB would have the balls to try and complete that, honestly?

2018 AFCCG. Driving for the tying FG or possibly the win. PMII threw an absolute dart to Spencer Ware on 1st down for 21 yards.
Ware was covered and Mahomes threw him open. From my vantage point, how he even thought that ball could fit there, much less have Ware catch it, was amazing.

I love the fact that we have a wide spread in the poll. That tells me that we have a lot of plays to choose from.
