Don't know why people thought the first was so good.

Too me it was just Power Rangers for grownups. nothing great about it at all.

I really liked the first one. Kind of surprised at the dislike. Much better treatment of the whole mecha/robot thing than what we usually get in America.
But maybe people dislike the genre.

Me too. Then again, I had zero expectation going in beyond awesome special effects sequences of giant robots fighting giant monsters. They could have removed all the filler/story in-between and I wouldn't have cared. My inner 12 year old came for the fight scenes and left a happy camper!

The monster designs in the first were too bland for me. Need to add a little punch to them in the next movie.
That and find a way to bring Ron Pearlman's character back to life.

Ron Pearlman's character lives. Watch after the first couple of minutes of credits.
I thought Pacific Rim was pretty fun, and as far as giant robot movies go, I liked it better than the Transformer shit. |

Thought the first was pretty stupid, to be honest.
The best thing about Pacific Rim was actually when I was watching the new Godzilla with my kids. When they were talking about how to handle Godzill and the, errr, Mutas or whatever they are called, my youngest son leaned over and said "I know ---- build giant robots!" I thought that was pretty damn good for a 10 year old.
