Brett Veach prioritizing re-signing Chris Jones, L'Jarius Sneed

HENDERSON, Nev. -- Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said he is aware of the challenge the organization faces in re-signing both defensive tackle Chris Jones and cornerback L'Jarius Sneed but said it would be an offseason priority to get both players under new contracts.

"Sometimes I look at our situation and I'm like, 'I don't know how we're going to do this,' but we usually work through things systematically and have a list of the priorities,'' Veach said as the Chiefs continued preparations for Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers. "Certainly, Chris and LJ are at the top of the list.

"It's extremely hard because you have two keystone players there.''

Jones, 29, has been one of the NFL's top pass-rushers for years. He had 10.5 sacks this season to tie for the team lead after missing training camp and the first regular-season game while holding out for a new contract.

He didn't get the extension he was looking for, but the Chiefs sweetened the final season of his existing contract.

"It was important for us to mend the fences with Chris because we love him and he's an iconic player here, not just here, but I mean of all time,'' Veach said. "That was important for us, and we'll continue to work hard and see if we can get something done, but it will be a priority for us.''

The Chiefs used Sneed, 27, this season to defend against the opponent's top receiver much of the time, and none had big games against him.

Jones and Sneed are key players for an improved Chiefs defense that allowed fewer points than all but one other team during the regular season and held the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens to 41 total points in the playoffs.

The Chiefs had defenses that were at times competitive since Patrick Mahomes became their starting quarterback in 2018, but rarely were they consistently so. Veach and the Chiefs found the task of building a top defense difficult because the past few seasons they were carrying Mahomes' massive contract.

"I still remember in '17 and '18 just saying if we can just get them to punt just once we've got a shot,'' Veach said. "Now all of a sudden it's like all we've got to do is just score once and we're good.

"Going from where we were in '17 and '18 to having one of the best defenses, knowing the constraints we had of just paying [Mahomes] and probably drafting later [in rounds], I don't think I ever envisioned having a top one or two defense.''

But I'd be surprised if Veach wasn't trying that very thing last season and getting stonewalled.

It's just hard to look at these negotiations without considering how they went last time. And the fact that the Katz brothers are mouth-breathing window-lickers.

At this point the Chiefs just don't have the leverage to really lean into some of the things I'd think they should've been able to accomplish last season. Best shot they have is Mahomes/Kelce convincing Jones to take command of the discussions and get the deal over the line.

Mahomes/Kelce will only be successful if they get him some State Farm/Hy Vee/ Subway.... money to help move the needle.

If we retain Jones, he won't be 'worth' what we're paying him. That's just the reality of 3rd contract guys. The money gets larger and the player gets worse. It's just a question of how long they can stay viable and whether or not that money could've done more for us if used in some other fashion.

It's not a slam-dunk either way. A Chris Jones contract could fairly easily go bad for us. But if that's the direction we go, it's hard to say it's a 'bad' idea.

I don’t think it’s an ideal move for the team. But I also think they have no substitutes for Jones. None. Literally none. Our interior DL is a barren wasteland and the Omenihu injury backs them up into an even darker corner.

I really like Jones, but he’s not a guy to explicitly trust beyond the contract year. As has probably been cited before here, Nate Tice has done work on his run fits and the evidence is he load manages himself. Implies he’s a guy whom a new contract could affect. He has a lot of reasons to be worth it regardless but that’s a real concern for a guy on a third contract.

I would be outright shocked if his regular season production comes anywhere near his contract price.

If you pay Jones, you are, in my mind, hoping for a good regular season DL that makes the occasional big play.

And that he earns his money in the post season.

I think 3rd round comp picks are as high as they go.

The comp pick is maxed at 97 I believe so pick 33 in round 3 is the best it could be. Or the first pick in round four if you are a glass half full guy.

Sure.

But our D looked okay in the Detroit game with neither Jones nor Omenihu.

Get a vet and beef up the WR group is an option versus feeling like you absolutely have to overpay for Jones...

I would like to see some incentives wrapped into the deal, but that reality may be difficult. I could see Veach giving him close to $30 a year which would include hitting $4-5 in incentives each year.

That would be awesome if Jones would agree to it. I'm not sure he would.

However, after sitting out the Detroit game, I didn't think I would hear such optimistic noises about him coming back.

Maybe he's gotten more flexible? Hopefully.

Or maybe it's all the same charade?

Smallest sample size possible. I’d love it if that were the reality though.
