Biden administration says it supports bill to make Washington, DC a state

Biden administration says it supports bill to make Washington, DC a state
The administration of U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday formally expressed its support for a House bid to make Washington, D.C., the 51st state, saying it would provide the District with “long overdue full representation in Congress.”

“Establishing the State of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth as the 51st state will make our Union stronger and more just,” the Office of Management and Budget said in a statement on Tuesday. “Washington, D.C. has a robust economy, a rich culture, and a diverse population of Americans from all walks of life who are entitled to full and equal participation in our democracy.”

The statement called for Congress “to provide for a swift and orderly transition to statehood for the people of Washington, D.C.”

The Democratic-led House is expected to vote this week on the “Washington, D.C. Admission Act” (H.R. 51). The bill was passed by the House last year, but was unsuccessful in the then-Republican controlled Senate.

Democrats would need the support of at least 10 Republican senators in order to advance the bill without getting rid of the 60-vote filibuster.

FOR

Residents ‘deprived’ of representation

“For far too long, the more than 700,000 people of Washington, D.C. have been deprived of full representation in the U.S. Congress. This taxation without representation and denial of selfgovernance is an affront to the democratic values on which our Nation was founded,” the statement said.

Two states, Wyoming and Vermont, have fewer residents than Washington, D.C.

The average size of a congressional district is about 710,000, according to data from the Census Bureau.

AGAINST

Wouldn’t qualify as a congressional district

D.C. wouldn't even qualify as a singular congressional district and here they are, they want the power and the authority of being an entire state in the United States — and they want that power,” Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) said.

“The Founding Fathers never intended for Washington D.C. to be a state,” Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD) wrote on Twitter, adding that the move “is really about packing the Senate with Democrats in order to pass a left-wing agenda.

The House represents people. The Senate represents states. California has the most members in the House with 53.

Amendment XVII was a mistake.

Letting people vote for Senators? Good point. Georgia is a good example.

I understand that distinction, however it all goes to the same pipe. If you are a GOP supporter, you should be thrilled at the long term senate prospects of not having to lose complete control and being able to shut down via minority rule what the majority wants.

Correct, and of course you know why and why it was brilliant. They also wanted DC to be neutral. If the citizens want representation, give DC back to Maryland and VA except for Gov't buildings... not that hard.

That's the easy answer. Not sure why anyone would be against it if they truly cared about those poor voters.

Generally speaking they try and keep all the tourist stuff contained to Waikiki. Maui to a certain degree (Lahaina side) as well, but people get salty when they see the tour busses and whatnot outside of the Waiks area. The North Shore of Oahu gets it as well but that's mostly limited and even locals floods that place certain times of the year.

Yeah, I'm not really sure what Dane thought that last part was supposed to do, other than acknowledge that the Senate is there to represent the states equally, not the people.

Having just left there a couple days ago, beautiful country but completely decimated by a hurricane 4 years ago and now full retard on Covid. Would have loved to stay longer but there just isnít enough to justify it. Itís not a third world shithole but itís completely dependent on the US protection. Honestly while I love the area itís time to cut losses because it provides no value now that a war with Cuba isnít an issue.

Internet moron has determined that having territory in the Caribbean provides no value. Well, that's that...the expert has spoken!
