It was to hide the pre-snap movement of the Chiefs "mini-backs". The RB by committee had Mike Garrett, Robert Holmes, and Warren McVea, all (on a good day) were 5'9". Curtis McClinton, a former RB, had moved to TE and Podolak was a rookie. Wendell Hayes was the FB.
