Defensive front

They gotta get away from the "run stopper vs pass rusher" mentality. They've gotta get guys that can do both.

I know I know easier said than done.

If you want to dedicate a ton of cap resources to rebuild by shotgun approach: Payne, Tomlinson, Davenport, D. Jones
Probably looking at like 40ish million to do it.
We simply lack the draft capital to retool the dline. It's too premium.

I'd say you could add 1 or maybe 2 of those, then throw in some complementary pieces and be fine.

But yeah, DL is a pretty premium spot anymore so you're gonna have to find a bit of a diamond in the rough and develop up there.

I don't think you can do much of anything in free agency, unless Brian Burns or Josh Allen are again on the trade block. And I think that ship sailed.

The solution is going to require us drafting our way out of it, honestly. But that's going to take a couple years to sow dividends. (And we likely can't use our 1st on it this year due to the tire fire we have at OT.)

Until then, you pay Chris Jones, you keep hunting for Dunlaps and Ingrams, and hope your draft picks pan out.

They can't wait that long, gonna have to do some things here. It's so bad they just get shoved around too much.

Honestly....give Jones a new deal. Sign Payne. Bring back Saunders and Wharton.

And then just stack as much depth as you can at DE in the draft.

As much as I'd absolutely LOVE to have Payne here, I can't fathom a situation where the Washingtons don't franchise tag him as a minimum.

Probably. I need to look and see what the franchise tag would be for DTs next year. My guess is closer to $20 million.

They've gotta take care of Sweat at some point as well IIRC.

Chiefs gotta do something up front though.

18,139,000 according to OTC.

They have a situation to make that work with 19+ in space and they can add with Carson Wentz cut or restructure.

The other critical area is WR. Off the top of my head, there's only three starting- quality WRs coming back next season: MVS, Skyy and Toney. Need at least another guy in there, and MVS may not be around next season, Toney may not be able to stay healthy, etc. Call it at least two.

I kinda disagree with the OP. I think they should absolutely be looking at getting a run-stuffer and a separate guy that can rush. I think that's the way to get value, get in depth with specialisms. We're not getting another Jones at DT unless we luck out in the draft, nor are we getting a top DE. But we could get a fattie and a speed merchant who can't set an edge. That imo will make the most difference for the least cost.

kccrow had some of this outlined elsewhere and I think it made a lot of sense, get a NT like Gaines (I'd prefer Worsley or Billings) and an Omenihu. Those should be completely reasonable and doable FA moves that would improve the DL significantly. We can't have elite across that line but we can have above average.

Yannick Ngakoue is a FA, has 9 sacks thus far,on a shitty Indy team that rarely has a big lead to pass rush from, has that or more pretty much every year. That's production. He's also the perfect stylistic book-end for Karlaftis.

There's one.

I'd also look at old man JJ Watt for the Dunlap/Ingram/Suggs over the hill, limited snaps/mentor guy. Maybe JJ would like a shot at a ring. I bet he would. He's got 7 sacks this year on a miserable Arizona team. If he could get 7 ALL year for us as DE3, that'd be worthwhile.
