Ten Things About Today's Game Week 15: Chiefs 23, Donks 3

Ten Things About Today’s Game Week 17: Chiefs 23, Donks 3

10. My phone woke me up around 3 AM when it said the Winter Weather Advisory had been upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning. In Missouri terms, that means “it’s gonna snow and snow a really lot.” Mrs. B and I have been burning it at both ends for the last two weeks. We were in Boston for the Chiefs-Pats last weekend; plane got home very late Monday. Mrs. B directed her annual Christmas Play (2 shows) yesterday in Lexington, MO - a free Santa show for the kids of the community, a beautiful thing. Then this morning it just seemed a bridge too far to go out and sit in five or six inches of snow at Arrowhead. We’ve both been fighting colds this week too, and didn’t want to get sick for Christmas. Also, our A-Game cold winter gear didn’t make it back on Fed Ex Ground from Boston Friday, so we don’t have our best cold weather gear available. So I called Scotty, the guy who sits next to me around 9am. He was on his way up to Arrowhead from the Lake of the Ozarks. He has a couple cousins here who are deer hunters and have good winter gear. So I sent him my tickets and they all went today. I got between five and six inches here at Stately Wayne Minor in Glorious Independence. I’ll attach pictures out my front door and on my back porch immediately after the game finished up.

9. We seem to do better when we win the toss and defer. The only good play the Donks had in the first half was a sucker pass play on a 4th and one call. Spags D gave up a field goal, and that’s all she wrote. Donks never had a chance in this one. I heard a stat couple days ago that the last 25 rookie QBs to come into Arrowhead, the only one to win was Andrew Luck. I watched Drew Lock’s entire career at Mizzou. I think he’s a slightly better Blaine Gabbert. I think he’s destined to be like Chase Daniel; a capable second stringer for many years somewhere. Don’t think he has the chops to be top drawer QB. His ceiling is maybe Andy Dalton. It was weird to root against a Mizzou guy, but I did the same when Shane Ray played for the Donks. A Donk is a Donk is a Donk, and they're all worthless in my eyes. We’ve beaten them nine straight times. And I heard another stat that Andy is 26- 3 against AFC West since 2015. Wow. Now if we could just beat the AFC South. They seem to give us fits for some reason.

8. This was one of those games that real contending teams dominate. There very well could have been a let down after the Pats win. Offense got right down to business and scored on their first five possessions, including all their first half possessions and first second half possession. Chiefs could have easily had another three but PMII made an ill advised throw at the goal line to a double covered Reek and the ball got picked. Reek also got dinged on that play. Pat should have just thrown the ball away but wanted to give Cheetah a chance to pull it in. Glad Patrick made it through the game uninjured. Donks roughed him on our very first offensive play. I was thinking they should bring Midnight Hour in for the last two drives, since we were basically pounding Spencer Ware in an out of control game. But great QBs hate to come out of the game. I get that, but sometimes you have to force them out of harms way.

7. Wanted to talk defense first. Spags’s guys are coming around. You could tell from the get go it was going to be a long day for Lock. Defensive held Donks to 251 total yards, only 52 of that rushing. That’s a good day against any NFL offense. I can only remember one or two rushes that went for more than 10 yards. Chiefs have done much better over the last month at not giving up long gashing runs since they let the Tits’ Henry run wild in that ugly loss (Glad the Tits lost today, I hate them.) The defensive secondary has been very good over the past month, even playing without Claiborne and Fenton. Fuller being back has helped. Ward continues to play well despite being beaten a couple times. He seems to tackle reasonably well. Breeland leads the league in DPI penalties, but saved the game against the Pats last week. Matthieu had a monster day today, could easily have had three picks in this game. It was fun watching him make snow angels on the field too. Gotta remember a lot of these guys are basically big kids. It was always fun playing football in the snow when I was a kid. I think a lot of these guys actually enjoyed themselves playing in the weather. Defense as a whole has forced 9 turnovers over the last three games. That’s how you win in this league. Take the ball away more than your opponent.

6. Okafor came off with an injured chest -maybe a pec injury like what happened to Ogbah. We’re running low on Defensive Ends. Clark was a monster today. K-Pass has played well. Maybe next week against the Bears we move Chris Jones to DE and play Nandi and Saunders more. We also might get Xavier Williams back from injury next week. Donks got shut down three different times going for it on fourth down. Well done Defense.

5. Kelce sets and NFL record by getting 4 straight 1000 receiving yard season by at TE. He was unstoppable. Even Backup TE Bell had a couple nice grabs. Donks just had no answer for covering the TE. We used to have that problem against Antonio Gates and Gronk. Two TDs for Tyreek, but otherwise his day was fairly quiet. PMII spread it around pretty well. Eight guys had catches. Nice use of the running backs too. Good mix of Sloopy, D-Train and Spencer Ware. I like Ware a lot. He can get that third and two for you, and doesn’t put the ball on the ground. Thompson had a very bad and unnecessary penalty that called back a 40 yard catch by Kelce. Very encouraging sign was after muffing a PAT, they made a two point conversion with no problem. Mahomes made that happen by keeping the play alive. Well done.

4. Patrick had 340 yards, 2 TDs and a force it pick at the Donks goal line. Sacked three times, two of those was because he held the ball too long. That’s gonna happen with Patrick. But KC was also 6-11 on third down, which is pretty good, especially in this weather. Again, just glad he got out alive. These are the kind of days where QBs get killed because of a slippery field and a missed blocking assignment.

3. Butt Kicker was money after the botched PAT. Colquitt couldn’t get the snap down. After that, everything was fine. Butt Kicker’s 40 plus yarder right at the half was a tough kick, clutch into the snow. He also set the all time Chiefs scoring record for a player in his first three years, which is impressive. He’s done better than Jan Stenerud and Nick Lowrey. Rest of the Special Teams plays were OK, although Colquitt hasn’t been punting as well over the last few games. I think this will be his last year. Pringle had a face mask on a punt return, but otherwise, special teams played it clean. Hardman’s judgement seems to be getting better with experience.

2. Apparently Grandpa Dick Vermeil was there to bang the drum, and gave the team a pep talk. Didn’t realize that he’s 83 years old now. Looks like it worked. I wonder if he gave everybody hugs and cried at the end? They estimated the crowd at 60,000, so big props to you who braved the elements. Crowd forced a couple false starts on the Donks. It’s hard to bring the noise with everybody bundled up like the Michelin Man. Sure hope everybody makes it home safe tonight.

1. So depending on what happens with Baltimore and the Pats, we still have a shot at a bye the first weekend. it’s kind of a longshot, but I’m thinking we end up with a first weekend game against somebody like Pittsburgh or the Tits. I’d love to beat the crap out of the Tits in Arrowhead for some major payback…both for this years loss and especially for two years ago in the Jeff Triplett game. So next it’s on to face Daaa Bearssss in Chicago. Mitch the Bitchsky has happy feet and horrendous field vision, and hopefully we can terrorize him like they did to Lock today. Remains to be seen if the game will be flexed, but I’d rather play at Noon, as it will be warmer, even if only by a few degrees. Last thing you want to do is play a night game in Chicago the third week of December. Let’s keep it rolling, and I love Screwing those evil Donks!

If my son is playing the Chiefs, I’m: 1. Hoping he stays healthy; 2. Plays well; 3. Loses.
I had girls so I wouldn’t have to face that dilemma.

You might need to consult with siberian khatru on your priorities, sodbuster.

Just a dumb joke about putting the Chiefs ahead of your wife’s Chinese craving. I’m sure your decision was the right one irl.

Butker set the NFL record for points scored in a players first 3 seasons, and he isn't done. He may set a record that will stand for decades.

Kelce set an NFL record for Tight Ends with his 4th consecutive season with at least 1000 receiving yards. I have to admit that I am very surprised that Tony Gonzalez didn't set that record, especially being #3 on the all-time receptions list.

Kelce tied the NFL record for Tight Ends for the number of seasons with at least 1000 yards receiving.

And its not a record, but am pretty sure that Tyreek Hill has more games with at least 2 receiving touchdowns than any other WR since he came into the league, with 7 games with at least two TD catches.

And on a side note, I think Colquitt fumbled the snap on the first PAT attempt because we scored too fast and he couldn't find his gloves. That is a very uncharacteristic mistake from guy who has played more games as a Kansas City Chief than any player in our history. Dave Toub seems to be checked out this season. We have given up blocked field goals, blocked punts, and we haven't returned a kick for a TD this year, that I can remember, despite having one of of the fastest return men in the NFL. It's been a long time since our Special Teams has played so poorly on a consistent basis.
