Game of Thrones Seasons 7-8

About to hit the 5000 post mark on the old thread, the first season 7 trailer today seems like the right time to start the final Game of Thones thread.

I'm going back to the original rules pre-2015. I don't think we need supervision or bannings. Just don't be a dick. Post anything you find online that hasn't aired yet inside of spoiler tags. That's pretty much it. I think we can all handle that...

For future us, 2015 thread is here: Link

So people have wondered a lot about the strategy of exposing the Dothraki. Sansa was talking with Royce a few times and we didn’t really see those knights so she may have had them hold back. Jon didn’t seem to care that the Dothraki were getting obliterated and wasn’t even keen on going to help but Dany wanted to so he had to join her.

There was still essentially two armies fighting as one against the army of the dead but perhaps they weren’t fighting as one as much as we were thinking. Perhaps the Dothraki being allowed to be destroyed and the Unsullied protecting the retreat of northerners by the planning group as a whole was an insurance policy against Dany’s army.

Most of those planning were northerners or supporting Jon more than Dany. And Dany wouldn’t really suspect her best interests weren’t the same as everyone else. Tyrion was really the only one with a big strategic battle input but it is questionable if he still supports her. Maybe Bran flipped him and everyone sort of just accepted that Dany losing the lions share of supporters in the battle was the best thing for potentially removing her claim and ability to forcibly take the throne. Then Sansa still has her ace in the hole of the only remaining mounted knights.

Or maybe the Dothraki are unpredictable and got pumped up that their weapons were on fire and they took off. That strategy has worked for them for every battle before that. They don’t have a ton of experience with the army of the dead.

I read something earlier that made some sense to me, about how they named the series Game of Thrones because the intent all along was to focus on the human drama and not the supernatural element. Whereas the books, a Song of Ice and Fire, were about how those human elements were a distraction from the real supernatural threat.

Which is why, as much as we've heard about how much GRRM told them, and how much they might not want the books to dismantle anything from TV, I think the books may be very different from the show. And while GRRM has often spoken about the importance of the political elements, there is so much of the supernatural from the books that doesn't exist at all on tv, from prophesies to characters to magical objects, and those elements aren't just going to disappear in the future novels. If anything they'll probably increase as the end approaches.

Based on the released chapters from TWoW, Euron's got a Valyrian steel suit of armor and is about to sacrifice Aeron to summon a kraken.. the books are so ****ing different. In so many ways.

I still think the Horn of Joramun will play a role in the books.

And it seems the books are our only hope in learning more about the White Walkers.

Even then, I'm not sure Martin will ever reveal much about them. For how much of an impact they've had on the overall story, they haven't shown up much in the books.

The only times I can remember them were the AGoT prologue, the Fist of the First Men, the two wights at Castle Black, letters telling of "dead things in the water and woods" by Eastwatch, and I vaguely recall a wight being mentioned in Varamyr Sixskins prologue.. any other encounters?

I've been busy as ****, so I haven't had a chance to post since Sunday, and there has been a lot of discussion.

RE: DaFace's point that it was "what we were expecting." I think there is a fair case to be made that what we got wasn't what we expected. We expected Jon or Dany to take down the NK. I expected the battle to be lost and head south. And we expected a bunch of major deaths.

We got Arya killing the NK after a ****ing ridiculously well-filmed pitch battle. We got Jorah and a bunch of minor deaths.

There were a few problems. Not very many of them took me out of the moment. The two that did, were the 1v100 fights by the end would never work. Also, after the dead laid on the trench, it was visible in the backround that Jon and Dany had been making passes back there. That's reeruned as ****. They needed to be keeping the walls clean.

That's really not a difficult leap if that's all there is after that ****ing ridiculousness that was the battle.

I didn't have trouble with Arya's leap. I figured she was hiding in a tree or something. I read a theory that she stole that wights face that she stabbed in the throat and used that to get close. But she's a mother****ing ninja. I got past it. And I recognized the knife move from her sparring session with Brienne. I thought it was brilliant.

I don't have a problem with the episode, the only problem I have is what happens next. I'm not sure I give as much of a **** and don't feel the story line is nearly as compelling.

But whatever. That episode IMO was ****ing awesome. Sapochnik is a master.

RE: Azor Ahai/Jon/Dani. When the hell have prophecies ever ****ing worked in the show? Matter of fact, when has anything that is lining up to work ever ****ing worked? Ned going after the Lannisters and hatching a good plan. Robb Stark never losing a battle. Tyrion's master plans which are well thought out. Dany doing all the right things in Mereen. Shit that looks like it is heading down a legitimate direction goes to ****. So did this. So Arya managed to save it by playing off the same thing that she got Brienne with. Her opponent underestimating her.

RE: Castle defense. Yeah. Castles are ****ing great. Except when a giant blows down the gate. Sure, there are a few tactical errors, but I can see where they line up the plan as they do, as the main goal is the NK, not the sanctity of life.

I rewatched The Long Night earlier and liked it even more the second time. Knowing what was going to happen allowed me to relax and pay attention to the more subtle details. One thing in particular that was tremendous that I barely noticed on first viewing was the score. The music was just amazing, beginning to end, and it really set the tone for the action. And the end of the episode, putting aside the argument about whether or not it should have been Arya and just focusing on it in terms of television production, was just masterfully constructed.
The music was amazing. If you care, the New Rockstars channel on YouTube does a pretty decent job on the music.

I agree on the episode. It was ****ing amazing. And Sapochnik is amazing.
