Trubisky is garbage. He’s being propped up by a great defense.

This situation looks like one of those beautiful slow motion train wrecks that you just can't turn away from.

Trading Mack looked dumb though but he's been out played by D. Ford so for the money it doesn't look so bad now. And Mack plays on a loaded defense.

He tends to scour film and his job has been essentially a talent scout for a long time now. So if you want a scout, sure I guess. Now factor in never dealing with contracts, etc. and there's a potential for some trouble.

I could see there being a big short-term benefit because that's pretty much all the guy did all year long. Unlike other GM's he didn't have to worry about the salary cap or NFL games or anything else. He just spent all his time watching game tape and collecting info on the college game.

And I'm sure he's got a ton of contacts after not being connected with a team. Hell, people might have told him more because he wasn't connected to any team...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

He was in a position where his draft board didn’t actually matter and he still kept his job. Miss on some picks and no big deal. Whole different ballgame now. Not that any of that matters cuz it’s Grudens show anyway!

One of the Denver Broncos reporters did a comparison of the Elway drafts vs. what Mayock had mocked to the Broncos (who he would have drafted) and there was a minimal difference. So as bad has Elway has been at drafts (according to the Denver fans), it's not like Mayock is some wizard who hits on every single pick. As you stated, it all sounds fine and dandy when you can spout knowledge about players but have no real accountability when or if they are a bust. There is a reason these guys are mostly talking heads and not a general manager of an NFL franchise. And I'm really curious to see if he is also managing the cap and contracts. As we saw from Dorsey, that is much more difficult than evaluating talent.

I'm kinda worried it will be too.

Mike Mayock played in the NFL. Albeit he wasn't very good and he also wasn't in it long but he still did. He knows how contract negotiations go down and how things work. He isn't walking in oblivious like some in this thread seem to think. Besides, the GM isn't the only man in the room and sometimes isn't the man in the room when contracts are negotiated; that task is often also up to the Director of Pro Personnel.

He's been right about many more players than he's been wrong. He's the draft analyst I've respected most over the years and the one I'm usually in line with thought wise. He has an eye for sleeper-type talent. He gets them wrong like every other scout, GM, and talking head out there but he has a good track record.

Just because Mayock was a "talking head" doesn't disqualify him as an adequate or reasonable candidate. He's no less qualified than Elway, Lynch, or many, many others that are former players. He's replacing a former player turned GM. People here think he's like Kiper. Well, he's not just a random schmuck off the street turned draft guru.

Like I said, short term he'll probably do pretty good.

The draft picks are slotted and he won't have to worry too much about contracts and the like. They can lean on the draft for the most part.

As time goes on though he'll have to learn quick the other 299 areas of being a GM...

What is NFL Network, and the rest of the sports media, going to do without Mayock's draft board to steal from?
