What moves are there left to make?

The Chiefs have $23.6m in cap space, and about $16m of that is going to be housed for the draft and for in-season pocket money (for when Veach wants to trade for a WR in October who will catch a Super Bowl touchdown for the third consecutive year).

Here's the roster (camp bodies not included):

Spoiler!

I think at this point there's only three places on this roster that needs "major" upgrades, and that's WR, LT, and IOL depth.

Chiefs' projected 2025 picks right now:

1st
2nd
3rd (Sneed)
3rd
4th
5th
6th (traded away for Mecole)
7th (traded away for Mecole)
7th (compensatory, if nothing changes)
* the Chiefs also tried to swap 7ths with the Panthers for Ihmir Smith-Marsette but that seems unlikely to have executed, since the Chiefs traded their 2025 7th away for Hardman

The Chiefs have 7 projected picks for 2025 (right now).

All told, I think the Chiefs re-sign Donovan Smith, I think they get a WR and IOL on the first and second days of the draft, and maybe go CB as well. And unless they get a shocking deal on the 3rd day, I think they try to sign Hunter Renfrow after the draft.

I'm confused about the 2025 pick discussion versus the current roster. Elaborate.

It also wouldn't surprise me if the Chiefs made a couple left-brained selections, like selecting a punter in the 4th round or go linebacker in the 3rd.

The Chiefs will be willing to go up and get the WR/LT they want this year, and those picks tell us what they may be willing to trade.

Trading a 1st and 3rd in 2025 to go up and get a stud LT seems, to me, to be on the table.

Okay... so two-fold thing...

One, you have to have eyes on the next season...

Right now the 2025 Roster (according to OTC) is:

Spoiler!

I think the focus this year should be LT, WR, TE and IOL.

That would help offset some needs next year since you likely need 2 starters on the IOL (I don't see them retaining all of them) plus other attrition with guys like Gray, Hollywood, etc.

As for the draft picks, I think the remaining needs you would have at DT, LB, S, and RB are things we routinely fill in FA so I'm not too worried about what we have/don't have. It would be nice to keep our 2nd and the TEN 3rd if possible.

That said, a 1st next year and a 1st this year probably gets you to 19, maybe need a small kicker. Add a 3rd next year and you're only really looking at getting to 17. I'd think 15 could be a sweet spot if you really want one of the upper tier of LTs and even then it could be a long shot. It really depends on what LAC, NYJ, and NO do at their picks. I feel like 15 is a stretch because you're looking at a 1 and 3 this year (or 2 next) and a 1 next year.

I'd agree if anyone said that, at some point, KC likely has to pay the piper and make a ridiculous move to go get a LT. Next year's class has the potential to be better early at LT. This year's class has way too many really good RTs and you're trying to project some to LT. That doesn't usually work out like it does in reverse.

The more I look at this class, the more inclined I am to see if the Giants would swap 2nds and give us their 2025 2nd for our pick at 32 if they want, say, Penix. We're still within a solid threshold for a WR at 47 or probably in play for Paul from Houston. Not too many like teams to do that with. Las Vegas but not sure we'd be inclined to help them get a QB.

My issue with trading up that high for anything other than a QB, which we don't obviously need, is that it's just a crapshoot and odds are, the guys you'd take with the 2 first round picks would be better value wise, than the 1 LT you take.

That's why you should only do it for a WR...or Bowers.

The chances are, you'll squeeze way more out of a top end weapon esp. early than a Tackle...

I'd do it for a LT before a WR or a TE.

I'm ok to do it for a Qb.

Any other position I just don't think it's worth the gamble.

The last I saw WR v T 1st round fail rates were pretty similar. But far more later round WR succeed than later round T's. I'd prioritize tackle.

They need to bring back Smith and MVS.

Those two moves takes some pressure off needing immediate starters in the draft. Early focus on the draft still needs to be WR and OT, barring some excellent player falling into our laps at CB or something like that.

Need to grab an IOL and TE at some point as well. I like Puni from Kansas in the third round as a possibility.
