Idea for Super Bowl halftime show

Marching band. They could hold a national marching band competition (I think it would be cool if it was high schools), and the winner gets to perform the halftime show at the Super Bowl. Instead of paying artists to perform, they could give money to the top 5 placing schools in the competition to go towards their music programs.

The drummer for the Foo Fighters joked that a Super Bowl might be like jumping the shark and he's not wrong on that. It was exactly what I was thinking. It's the biggest stage of the year. They can pick whoever they want. Yet they picked Justin Timberlake and Coldplay and now Maroon 5 a few years past their prime (even worse... Maroon 5 was never even close to as popular as the other 2).

If they ever have one at Arrowhead they can just do a halftime presentation of ‘Shepherd OF The Hills’ outdoor theatre

Or we could have Jim Caviezel re-enact the passion of the Christ.

Or just ****ing re-cap the first half and blow their load on commercials and get on with the game in 15 minutes.

The NFL constantly picks acts that the vast majority of football fans don't like, it's brilliant.

Actually, it is. The football fans are already watching the game so why cater to them at halftime. Not to mention that the audience has a broad musical taste spanning nearly every genre. Instead, the halftime show is to get people that are disinterested in football to watch a screen for 30 or so minutes while they blast them with ads and shitty music. Typically, they pick top 40 pop artists for a reason. They broadly appeal to more people, thus netting them a few million extra ad viewers if even for 30 min.

The halftime slot is reserved for local and lower-cost ads, though.

But what makes the super bowl unique is how many disinterested fans will go to watch parties just to be social. Several wives at the parties I go to pay no attention to the game but love the commercials and always talk about the halftime show.

Marching bands are boring...save that crap for the college bowl games.

The problem is...today's music is ****ing garbage...just about all of it.

Justin Timberlake/Chris Stapleton would be about the only modern day performer(s) I would watch. And JT's been there/done that, would be surprised if he did it again if asked.

They should have Metallica play halftime, just as long as they play most of their older mainstream hits, not the dumpster fire bs they've come out with the past 15-20yrs.

Sure, but bowener was contending that the idea was to get more eyes on sets (I actually agree with this point) so that those eyes are watching commercials (I don't agree here). Most of the commercials during halftime are either local or regional and low-budget. So the NFL isn't getting the kickbacks there, the affiliates and their owners are.

I was fully prepared to click on this thread and tell you that your idea sucked. But, it doesn't. I like it...a lot.
