I won't even concede "Outside of Mahomes"

The Chiefs moved up from 27, man. So anybody before 27 could've moved up. And the teams after 27 had more than enough draft capital to beat our offer. Some of them even had picks higher in the round.

Literally every single team in the NFL had an equal/better shot at Patrick Mahomes as the Chiefs. And they simply didn't get it done.

I'll never join the "**** Dorsey, I'm glad he's gone" crowd because he's the dude that put that trade with Buffalo together. He's the dude that knew right where he needed to be and made sure he went into that draft with the framework to get there already in place.

He did a spectacular job getting us into that position when nobody else did. And he transformed the franchise. It may have been Veach that sold the rest of the team on getting Mahomes but it was Dorsey that did the spade work to make sure they could have him. That deserves a TON of praise.

He's the GM we deserve, but not the one we need.

Though I guess it was his drop that really impressed with. Excellent footwork. Good protection. You can really see him go through his reads in time with his feet. Montanaesque. Like he was dancing. The delivery is still awesome.

Montana didn't do that.
This is also where armstrength comes into play. He actually got to Watkins late as he was open for a bit earlier. But he's got such a howitzer, it didn't matter.

Excellent points. We must consider and weigh how much of that drafting was based on software models, how much on long and short-term research, and how much on good, old fashioned instinct/table-banging.

I am curious as to how much( or little )Veach will incorporate from Dorsey's methods in to his own program. Dorsey's greatest strength was his unrelenting quest to overturn every possible rock to find hidden gems.
How much do we know already? What can we go on?

Oh, I agree completely. I often point out that every other team, especially the Bills, could have drafted Mahomes, but chose not to. Even Denver had better draft capital to pull off a trade. My point was centered around the argument of "well, Mahomes would simply stink here because the Bills don't have the weapons that KC has." Usually, I pick apart that lunacy by pointing to how awesome Mahomes is on his own. This time, however, I was more focused on how KC didn't simply amass these weapons through high picks; KC is good because they drafted well in the later rounds by going BPA and I hope that continues.

The Cam Erving deal says otherwise.

Veach is our guy.

Also understand that this team is where it is, in part, to a WR that Chief Fan didn't want on the team. How many teams do you think wish they had taken Reek in the 5th? How many would give up a first for him right now?

THAT is the hallmark of being a good GM that fully understands that his fans are complete idiots.

Eh, body of work and give me a couple of drafts with all picks present and accounted for before I make a further ruling.

I think we'll see a shift away from pure measurables and SPARQ scores; fewer combine warriors, perhaps. There will be some positives to take from that, but there will be some negatives as well.

Veach will take Speaks and his higher floor over K-Pass and his higher ceiling and sometimes that will work out better for us. But Veach may also be less inclined to gamble on Kelce or Hill; may not be as likely to take an LDT.

I'll concede that Dorsey approached the draft a little too 'scout heavy' at times. He got a little too drooly with guys who could turn into stars if 20 different things broke right and maybe looked past some basic immediate team-building considerations. But g'damn did he have an eye for those gems and there's an argument to be made that it made the rest of the quibbles worth it.

I still wouldn't have fired him. He deserved the opportunity to see it through with this team and I see no reason to believe he couldn't have done a great job going forward.

Middlekauf talked about him quite a bit recently on his podcasts. Apparently he had an ego problem and didn't get along with many people in KC.

Seemed pretty grain of salt for me though so who knows.

Really?? Nah. I'm pretty sure if you've got Tyreek sitting there after you have done your due diligence, you're sending his name to the podium. I say that because in HIS case it's no so much a "gamble" as it is some extra PR work and Alka-Seltzer if need be.

Again, we just have to wait and see. Only time can answer these questions.

GM's often get too much credit or blame. NFL teams build up great scouting staffs. Dorsey certainly had an eye for talent but so does Veach. The great thing is there are still guys in KC than can do that (although we have been raided a bunch for scouts).

I would say BPA with a generous slant toward defense.

This is it. Maybe it’s just the style and way he throws it, but no other QB in the league can just turn on a dime with their whole body like that, especially running to the left..
