*.* NEW- 2014 General Fitness Thread *.*

I guess we filled up the old one... http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showthread.php?t=280149

Welcome to 2014! Now get your ass in top physical condition!

No one else started it so here it is!

**From the 2013 Thread**

If you want to get back into lifting, or need a new lifting routine, START HERE:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wi...inner_Programs

If you have questions about the SS programs, look here:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ

Keep in mind that you're a novice lifter for a longer period of time than you think you are. Novice lifting can last anywhere from a few months to a year or two, depending on how hard you hit the weights and where you started.

Once you've reached the point where you don't make regular progress on the SS program, you are ready to move on to the intermediate stage, which can last you for a good number of years. Find it HERE:

http://madcow.hostzi.com/5x5_Program/Linear_5x5.htm

If you're a very advanced lifter (many, many years of CONSISTENT weight training), then there are lot of programs out there, and which one you pick is simply a matter of preference. If you're really that advanced, you should know what works for you and what doesn't by this point.

Truth, this man speaks.

Don't use a pad for the bar when you squat either. That's what traps are for.

45lb or 45 kg? Major difference Nancy.

I walk with the 90-100lb DBs on those. Sometimes I'll use straps if heavy deadlifts earlier wore out my grip strength. Sometimes I'll just use chalk.

Loading the trap bar with 275lbs and walking is my preference though.

I recommend not using anything to grip the bar to work on your grip strength and forearms. They can be helpful towards end of workouts, however, if my grip just seems to give out and I still need to do heavy work such as walks or Rows.

Never use straps for deadlifts though. That's a definite no-no.

I always find it funny when I see guys doing direct forearm work but using straps for everything. If they switched those two around, no straps for everything and no direct forearm work, I bet their forearms would be bigger.

Just screwing with you, though. I'm weak as hell these days and haven't focused seriously on strength training in years. Hit goal of 405 deadlift and sort of lost interest in going really heavy (not that 405 is heavy for a lot of people).
I'll add more just for you

Seriously though I wasn't sure if you're supposed to lift heavy on Farmers walks or not. I'm always very cautious on anything involving shoulders.

Don't do anything you can't handle, but it shouldn't be a problem. It's not the jerky, explosive type of workout that generally leads to injury.

I'm a couple pounds away from a 50 pound weight loss since March 25th. I get to the gym 4-5 days a week and begin with 1 hour on the elliptical for 8 miles plus 3 minute cool down. I then stretch out my back and hamstring and side twists for 15 minutes on the large yoga balancing ball with another 10 lb small hard ball for my twists and forward bending. I then lift for 25-30 minutes usually with 70 lb curved bar for 3 sets of 12 curls, then I drop down to 50 lb curved bar for 3 sets of 10 reverse curls, then 2 sets of ten of overhead standing press behind my head. Then some pec deck at 100 lb for flies 3 sets of 12 and then some tricep push downs on the standing cable machine with 60 pounds. I then hang in the sauna for about 10 minutes.

At 54 years old, I'm happy with where I'm headed for both my weight and strength.

Real kettlebellers (gireviks) measure in poods. (Not really, but when I first started with them, a lot of people did.)

Anatomy isn't your strong suit along with math I see. 2.2lbs per kg.

How is holding dumbbells at your sides involving your shoulders much? It should be pummeling your traps and upper back. That's why you should go heavy and for about 30 meters if you really wanna hit it hard.

Thanks-I feel fantastic and eager to get the last 50 pounds off by Dec 1

It's amazing all the things I couldn't do with all the extra weight. It's like an epiphany

Things like putting on a belt, tying my shoes and washing easily in the shower.

It's a great feeling of accomplishment you've worked hard and deserve it! When I first started I was 273. I'm 225 now but man once I got to 235-240 I had to fight and claw for every pound lost. Good luck on your journey man those last 50 will be tough but you're already half way there you got this!
