Hypothetical: If you were aboard the Titanic.

Would you have lived or died? Find out here and I'll let you know.

Tell me if you want to be a man, or if you'll take on the role of either gender, and I'll roll the dice for you and assign you a real person who was on the ship.* (If you're a woman, let me know too and I can give you a female dice roll.) If you don't tell me, I'll assume you're a guy.

I'll let you know the person's name, age, origin, embarkation point, destination, passenger class if they were a passenger, and their department and job if they were on the crew. In some cases we don't know so you'll get a blank, but the information is pretty good.

Oh, and if you were a passenger your crew stuff will come back as unknown, and vice versa if you were crew. There was a small handful of people who were both passengers and crew. The ship's orchestra and the Guarantee Workers were the two groups listed in both classes. (Guarantee workers were the expert repair guys who were assigned to the maiden voyage to make repairs of anything new that was broken. They apparently didn't have expertise in major hull repairs.)

You're then welcome to look up more detail about the person if you can find it. Some of them have interesting stories.

So sign up in the thread and I'll let you know.

* For some reason I'm missing a small number of people, but I've got about 98 percent of them in my database.

If you died and your body was recovered, here are the ships that recovered you, based on your body ID number:

MB – CS Mackay-Bennett (bodies 1–306)
M – CS Minia (bodies 307–323)
MM – CGS Montmagny (bodies 326–329)
A – SS Algerine (body 330)
O – RMS Oceanic (bodies 331–333)
I – SS Ilford (body 334)
OT – SS Ottawa [57] (body 335)

If you survived, you can go here to see the story of your particular lifeboat. Hard lifeboats were labeled 1 through 16, and four collapsible lifeboats were labeled A through D.

You were the richest guy on the Titanic, with a worth that would be over $2 billion today. You'd been educated at Harvard, started a few hotels in New York, and had previously traveled in Europe for three years to give yourself culture.

At this point you'd just remarried, betrothing an 18 year old (who was now pregnant, you rascal you), and you were returning from your honeymoon with her, your manservant, your maid, your wife's private nurse, and your dog. Your group occupied three first class cabins that collectively cost about 5 times the annual wages of the wait staff who served you.

You did not think the accident was serious and did not want to get onto a life boat. Eventually, once things started looking bad, you changed your mind. You were able to put your wife, nurse, and maid onto Lifeboat 4, and asked to join them, but you were told that they were still loading women. (After you stepped back, a few male crew members were able to jump onto the boat as it was being lowered.)

Your faithful manservant at your side, you waited but couldn't get an another ship. Neither you, he, nor your dog survived. They found your body later, carrying quite a bit of cash that did you no good in the end.

You were a Swedish immigrant in North Dakota, and one of your jobs was to recruit other immigrants to the area to work. This is what you were doing on the Titanic, as you led a group of 17 Swedes to the promised land of the northern plains.

In the scramble aboard the ship, you threw yourself into a lifeboat as it was being lowered. You later reported a fear that you would be shot, but you were dead anyway if you didn't try. It's believed that it was Lifeboat 15, which was the most crowded lifeboat that was almost swamped by having 65 people on it. It was the last lifeboat found, so you likely had a long night. But hey, you survived.

At least some of your group survived because they were Swedes, but I'm not sure how many.

You went back to the Dakotas and became an unlicensed chiropractor, moving frequently to keep from getting arrested for practicing without a license. You eventually found a home in South Dakota and stayed there (presumably still practicing without a license).

Remember those stories about how the orchestra played as the ship went down? Well, you were the bass player. They eventually found your body, sans instrument. You were one of the few people who were listed as both passengers and employees.

I always wondered if the bass player could have floated away on his instrument, but apparently not.

Very cool. A bassist from Liverpool. I actually did survive by using my bass as a boat. I then changed my name to Paul McCartney.

YES! I finally lived in one of these.

Apparently doing non-licensed medical procedures is easy in South Dakota. I was able to practice there for 40 years.

Quote:
Sometime during his residence in North Dakota Oscar began to train as an osteopath or chiropractor. It is unclear whether he ever completed his training but he practiced for many years, albeit in an unlicensed capacity, and was known to locals as "Doc." However, because he never officially registered he and his wife sometimes had to move from town to town to avoid a citation for practicing without a license. In 1925 (another source says 1920), they settled in Onida, South Dakota, where Oscar practiced for almost 40 years.
