That will be the carrot that the league offers to keep the salary cap where it is at and not reduce it.

Better to pay for a home game that actually means something than to pay for a fourth preseason game.

Hopefully in most seasons we'll have locked up the BYE early, so we can be strategic about resting dudes.

Absolutely. And the performance perks built into contracts will actually matter.

All I know is that nobody is taking a pay cut. NFLPA will fold on this one and then there's no turning back.

Has there been any progress made increasing personnel count per team? With the longer seasons, more players will be needed for injuries etc.

I know that I'm a weird numbers guy, but I think my main issue with it is having it be 17 games, which is going to always be weird and uneven. The 16-game season is so elegant:

Division (x2) - 6
Rotating opposite-conference division - 4
Rotating same-conference division - 4
Same-ranked teams from the other same-conference divisions - 2

And the result is that every team plays four #1 teams, four #2 teams, four #3 teams, and four #4 teams (based on division rank).

Playing 17 games is always going to result in some inequality among teams in the division. Even 18 would be better.

I'm with you here. But, there was already a difference between us having to play the nfc south this year and the steelers/ravens etc only having to play the nfc east.

Get rid of two pre-season games
Add another bye week
Keep the salary cap high

Players will vote for the change

It also makes a "first place" schedule tougher. It appears to be seeding based. So finish first in your division, you'll get the first place team from 5 of the other 7 divisions, while everyone else gets 2 (plus your own division).
