RAPOPORT: Steve Spagnuolo, Dennis Allen, John Pagano names to watch at DC

Just heard on NFL Total Access.... FWIW. https://twitter.com/rapsheet/status/...864004097?s=21

Allen, the Saints DC, is a free agent for those who may read that and wonder.

The whole comfort zone thing is nonsense. He hired Sutton, who wasn't apart of his coaching tree. He hasn't coached with Spags in almost 15 years.
Yep. If you look at the defensive coaches on the staff none of the staff had worked with Reid prior. Smith and DeLeone worked with Sutton prior to coming here which means they should be shit canned along with Sutton.

I agree. I don't want a retread with proven issues of failure and all of the other shit. The NFL has changed, defense has changed, and we have to change with it if we are going to compete.

If Macdonald is the best fit for the criteria of young, smart, coming up, and bringing some proven success, then that's where we need to go.

For us especially run defense is massively important. That's what teams want to do to keep Showtime on the sidelines. Run the ball up our ass to limit Mahomes chances.

That's how Elway said he picked players - and he did draft a pretty good defense.

It's not like Armageddon where some know how to be astronauts and the other know how to me miners. The two things are freaking inter-connected.
Given the candidate pool, I really hope he goes with either a co-coordinator or special advisor route. We'll either get a lukewarm veteran hire or a wildly inexperienced young defensive mind. I'd rather have a young defensive mind getting a ton of help from a very experienced vet.

Putting a veteran DC in a Childress role would actually be spectacular. Mentor a young DC on coordinator a defense. Advise some on scheme. And spent a ton of time researching the hell out of innovative looks on the pro, college, and high school level. So yeah... why isn't Reid borrowing from his own damn playbook.

I really don't love that his history is so tied to the Sutton scheme. But he's unfairly getting blame from people who want to blow this thing up. He was excellent in the lanes he's been given. First developing Chris Jones. Then developing Ford. I hope he stays in some capacity.

It could work out if he's paired with someone who pushes him to innovate. Unlike Rex, his scheme is probably a bit more adaptable.
Spags wasn’t interim for Payton.

Aaron Kromer and Joe Vitt were.

And you can see why they do it. 24 points in 3 minutes of possession during the 4th quarter the other day.

I want to see a far more aggressive defense. Either force a turnover/sack or give up a quick TD. At least you don't let the other team hog the ball for 80% of the game.

YES. MAKE THEM PLAY OUR GAME. Take away any other option.

They lead the league because teams passed the ball due to being behind massively. They were 7th in the NFL in sack rate, which is still good.

Being a Texas Tech fan how was Mike Smith's defense while he was there?

Horrible. Gave up 82 points to TCU. Team went 4-8. The only bright spot that year was Mahomes as a true freshman after Davis Webb got hurt.
