Smart home products

Who has them? What do you have?

We got a Nest thermostat a few months ago and we just completed our first cycle on the gas bill with it for an entire month. The results are pretty awesome. It’s been a pretty cold winter this season and despite that our gas bill has been greatly reduced. Compared to the same time period last year our bill was about $80 less. We will see how consistent the savings are but the early returns are nice. It’s also convenient for ease of use with the app.

We also have three Google mini speakers. They are pretty handy. One of the best things is using them as whole home surround sound.

So has anyone else started incorporating smart home products?

When I found out that my microwave was taking video, I swore off any and all "smart" products. Not worth the risk.

I have the whole house minus the security system “smart”. I keep security “closed” with old school wired system. I switched from Nest thermostats to ecobee and like the ecobee much better. I don’t use location services and the Nests preferred that for anticipating changes. My home has 3 separate systems/zones and the ecobee room sensors and 3 different thermostats communicate. I run a natural gas powered back up generator if electrical power drops to power 1 HvAc system and 1 house level lights as well as security. Really like the Alexa’s control of Hue lighting and auto hue routines along with Alexa control of Av systems via Logitech hubs

I'm starting to think that it's not a good idea to be imbedded in tech. The tech is great, but the forces behind it are scary.

the best part though are the remotes. I have one in both vehicles and you can actually just sit in your vehicle and make the door open or close.

Sure beats the hell out of lift the door manually.

What info can a smart device give the powers that be that they don't already have or they can't get from your phone?

I have a couple smart plugs that I love. That's about it. Wouldn't mind a camera for my front door but it's just not something I want to spend money on at this time.

Don't really see what the benefit of nest is though.

I have 2 Nest Thermostat as well as 2 Remote Temp Sensors (both hooked up to the upstairs thermostat). Also have a Google Home and 2 Home Minis.

The Remote Temp Sensors for the Nest Thermostat are awesome. It allows you to modify your schedules as well on the thermostat to use a specific sensor as well for the reading. So for example, at night, I set our upstairs to use the one in my daughter's room so she never gets cold, the morning it switches to the one in our bathroom so my wife is not cold getting out of the shower and then during the day it uses the one in the hall as this is the warmest of the 3.

My wife and I were just talking about a camera the other day. We were at the mall and we looked at nest or ring or something. But I don't necessarily want or need something to tell me who's at the door, because that happens three times a year. We don't get many visitors. I want something that'll watch the front steps and the porch, because I'm assuming that package thieves and burglars don't ring the doorbell.

All for security/cameras.

But everything has to go on the 2.4 wifi. Will that get overloaded?
I have 4 cameras. Roomba. Kids devices.
