"Good Money" "A lot of money"

These terms are used in conversations all the time. Conversations with colleagues, friends, strangers and family. I was thinking about this lately when you hear about professions and try to determine what that person may make. At what monetary amount do they make "good money" or "a lot of money?"

I want to determine if there's a fairly consistent threshold for each of these for people describing jobs. I realize the area a person lives in will also determine this (**** you Seattle!!!), but I am just talking about this scenario for general purposes and what these terms mean to you.

"Good money"- I hear people all the time describing their job this way. "It's not a glamorous job but I make good money." Or "I'd look for another job but the money is good." I find that many people describing jobs this way see "good money" as a livable wage but not enough to be considered rich.

-What threshold to you is "good money?" $40k+, $50k+, etc.

Realizing this can sometimes be determined by knowing what the person does or who they are. If Billay mentioned making good money, I simply know it's a job between $30-40k/year for him and his skills.

"A lot of money"- I hear people describing others they know or maybe just an occupation in general. "I heard Mark is in sales now and makes a lot of money." or "If I was young, I'd become a pharmacist. They make a lot of money."

-What threshold to you is "a lot of money?"

Context is everything here. If I'm talking to some dude in a small town in a relatively poor county for example, and he says he makes good money, it might be $30K. If he says he knows a guy that makes alot of money, it might be $80K. Here in the KC area, particularly upper middle class neighborhoods, to me, good money is $100K and alot of money is north of $200K

You need to calibrate your scale.

* 34% of all Americans have ZERO savings.
* 35% of all Americans have less than $1000 in savings
* The median savings for families whose wage earners are between 50 and 55 years old is only $8,000.
* For those who are between 56 and 61, it’s $17,000, reports the Economic Policy Institute.

Those are just amazing stats.

"Good money" and "a lot of money" is an interesting convo, but most of that depends on location, and where you are at in your life (age, marital status, kids, etc). I don't make as much money as I used to 3-4 years ago, but I don't need to. I think I make a lot of money given what I do and how much effort I am currently putting out, but others may see it as just good money.

Where you live and how good you are with money have got to be figured into any such conversation, IMO. A good friend of mine comes to mind here.

Lets say you gave me $1k and gave him $10k. Didn't tell us what it was for, just said Merry Christmas and walked away. Then come back in maybe 30-45 days and check our financial status, I would bet you money that I would have more than him.(obviously, I'm assuming that money is all we have) And we live right here in the same little town.

Even using the same area/cost of living, a particular dollar amount just won't work as a comparison. If you wanted to know how much money it would take each of us to maintain the same lifestyle in the same small town, I simply don't have an answer. But he will need a staggeringly larger amount than me. Bless his heart, he's a good guy and a fairly hard worker. But he is allergic to money.

Sadly, more people are like him than me as Prison pointed out with those life savings numbers. That is sad.

Honestly though, the numbers people threw out were relatively close, which is kind of amazing!

My numbers before starting the thread were $70k+ for good money and $200k+ for a lot of money. Seems many in this thread see $70-80k for good money and $200-250k for a lot of money.

Surprised many had similar figures when talking in general terms on these numbers!
