The doctors and trainers will probably give us an aggressive and a safe timeline. We took the aggressive timeline with Justin Houston and Hali only for them to reinjure themselves and be ineffective for the playoffs. Mahomes was cleared to play on that ankle all season even though it's clearly still been bothering him. Being cleared to play only means hes passed the minimum standard for recovery. It is up to Reid, not the trainers, to decide how aggressive or safe they want to be in his return.

Throughout this thread you've consistently argued to sit him for more games than the medical staff determines he needs. That in itself is dumb. Those extra games you deem necessary can absolutely negatively affect the outcome of the season.

I saw Mark Sanchez (who had the injury) talk about how he’s at a high risk for this to occur again. Now maybe that’s true, maybe not, but I just hope we take the cautious approach on it.

If he comes back early and it’s more likely occur because of it, that would be quite stupid.

A dislocated kneecap could happen at any time, even after three weeks. Once it's back in place, it's good as long as there's no ligament damage. It will just swell for a couple of weeks. Considering the medical team he has, I'm sure they've done everything to minimize swelling. Rushing back isn't going to be the reason if it pops back out again. If he's going to rest, I'd say it's more for his ankle. Either way, I hope that coming back is his decision, and that it's not one made hastily.

That's asinine at this point. This team just lost to Indy and Houston AT home. We shouldn't be overlooking anyone at this point. Need every bye and advantage.

The medical staff will tell Reid when mahomes is passable. Just as they did with his ankle even though it's not 100%. I get why we decided to still play him and support that decision. But being cleared to play isn't the same as saying it's the best route. What if the choice was to safely play mahomes at 75% the rest of the way, or wait a week or two to get mahomes to 80-85%. Would you rather a lesser version of playoff mahomes and a playoff bye, or a better version for 3 games. Id much rather the better version.

We lost to indy and Houston and almost lost to Detroit because mahomes looked blatantly bothered in the second half by an ankle he was cleared to play on. We can crush those teams with a healthy mahomes. If anything, those second halves should be even greater proof of how important it is for mahomes to be as healthy as possible.

This is good news, Sanchez was carted off and actually had some patella tendon damage on Aug. 9, 2008 and practiced a short time later and started on Aug. 30th. He had elective minor surgery to tighten the tendon as a Jet in 2010, but never dislocated again in 2008 or years after.

After Poe clued us all in, multiple news outlets later reported USC's Mark Sanchez was carted off the field today after dislocating his kneecap during a passing drill.

Though a dislocated kneecap sounds like something that would cause me to beg doctors to put me down, the Trojan quarterback could be back on the practice field by Monday.

Mark Sanchez's decision is in. The Jets quarterback has opted to have surgery on his left knee. Sanchez is expected to have an elective procedure to strengthen and stabilize the ligaments around his patella tendon.

Team orthopedists Dr. Kenneth Montgomery and Dr. Elliott Hershman will perform the surgery, probably within the next few weeks, given Sanchez will need at least eight weeks of recovery time.

General manager Mike Tannenbaum said last week he was confident Sanchez would be ready well before training camp in July, but indicated he would miss a portion of the Jets' offseason conditioning program that begins in late March.

Sanchez visited Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., a week ago, and the renowned orthopedist checked both of Sanchez's knees. Andrews recommended surgery on the left knee, not the right one Sanchez hurt diving headfirst Dec. 3.

The surgery isn't necessarily a must for Sanchez, but by strengthening the area around the patella tendon, the Jets are hopeful it will help prevent further damage to the knee he injured before his junior season at USC and tweaked again in a 17-6 win over Carolina on Nov. 29. His right knee will be rehabbed but does not require surgery.

Sanchez dislocated his left kneecap in August 2008 and played that season with a brace. He also wore a brace on the knee for protection, and played with braces on both knees Dec. 20 against the Falcons. That was his first game after sitting out a 26-3 win over the Bucs to continue rehabilitating his right knee.

Sanchez moved around well during the Jets' postseason run, compiling a 92.7 rating. He completed 41 of 68 passes for 539 yards, threw for four touchdowns and two interceptions in becoming only the fourth rookie quarterback since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970 to start a conference championship game.
