@Ken_Rosenthal: Correction: #Indians' guarantee to Edwin is three years, $65M, including $5M buyout on fourth-year option.

@ClintScoles: It would be nice if the Royals could counter this move with a Napoli signing, but it doesn't sound like they have the financial flexibility.

It's not out of the realm of possibility that we can be competitive this year, but I really don't see it. I'm about ready for us to sell off our pieces and actually get some decent prospects in return. I am terrified of us being in the position around the trade deadline this coming season where we're not good enough to be at the top of the division but we're also just close enough that Dayton doesn't decide to sell. I'm really worried about all of our free agents leaving after 2017 and us basically getting nothing for them.

Napoli isn't nearly as good a hitter as Encarnacion the last 5 years... He's also older and probably going to bring a hefty price as well. That signing by the indians is a gutpunch, for sure.

Yeah, it gives them a decent upgrade over what Napoli provided last year (though I'd expect Encarnacion's numbers to fall a bit playing 38 road games in KC, Detroit, Minnesota and Chicago vs Boston, NYC, Tampa, Baltimore)... and likely more consistency. The DH market is so saturated, I think KC will have a nice cheap option it can add on a one-year deal, someone Like Alvarez or Carter, if it really wants. I do like hearing Moore is trying to maintain some financial flex for the trade deadline. That's a positive, at least. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

There are a lot of "ifs," but I don't think the chances have entered remote territory yet. A lot hinges on Duffy, Gordon, Moustakas, and Soler. If Soler takes the step the Royals think regular PT will let him take... If Duffy gives them a full year of ToR performance... If Gordon bounces back with a .260/.340/.425 line (not a huge one, just a solid one) ... If Moustakas is healthy and some approximation of the hitter he has been over his last 800-900 ABs (.270/.340/.500)... I think you're talking about a team that is easily quite a few games better than it was a season ago. Enough to catch Cleveland? I don't know. But enough to be a playoff contender, for sure. They're also in good shape to get comp picks for most of the pending free agents. Hosmer for sure. Duffy, Moustakas and Cain, if healthy in 2016, will get big enough deals to get comp picks. If Kennedy opts out, they'll get a comp pick for him. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

To be honest, a Division Title for the Royals in 2017 was always a pipe dream, IMO. I just don't see enough pieces in the puzzle to make it happen - regardless of what CLE or any other team was/is doing in FA

Royals will be good. We have too many players that need big years for contracts. I expect some monster years from some barring injuries of course.

If the Indians rotation stays relatively healthy, they should win the division. But that's also a big "if" given the last couple of years. Every team has it's issues. We probably have a smaller margin than the Indians do, but we'll see what happens.

After saying in spring training the Blue Jays aren't going to get a hometown discount, he's already given them a 5 year hometown discount, and the rumors that he wanted $30 million/year... Bautista might end up getting a one year deal.
