Agreed.

And to your other post I also agree it’s pretty lame. It will be higher in 29 though it goes up a little each year.

Still not what I thought it was

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap300...-resign-looney

More from the NFL.com article:

The Veteran Salary Benefits pot increases every two seasons: $1.35 million in 2022, $1.45 million in 2024, $1.55 million in 2026, $1.65 million in 2028, and $1.75 million in 2030, the final year of the current CBA.

If the salary cap actually rises to $300 million or more over the course of the next 10 years, $1.75 million isn't much of an incentive and I don't see much benefit for the player or a team to retain a player just based on this exception alone.

This is where I got my information. Written after the cba was approved by the players. Maybe it's wrong but it's from a credible website.

And obviously I glossed over the 1.25 instead of 1.5 mil.

And there's a new "Veteran Salary Benefit" that allows a team to re-sign up to two of its own players per year (provided they have at least four years of service time) and exclude as much as $1.25 million of each player's base salary from each year's salary cap. Here's an example: Let's say you're a four-year veteran on the Jets, and they want to re-sign you. They can offer you a one-year, $6.25 million deal, and only $5 million of it will count against their salary cap if they designated you as one of their two VSB exceptions. If you left and signed with, say, the Patriots, for one year and $6.25 million, the Patriots will have to count all $6.25 million against their cap. It's sort of a starter version of the NBA's midlevel exception rule, as I understand it.

Ok, I just read the cba that was sent out to the players. Not the whole thing, but I found the right part.

Thanks to mahomo and this post for the link

Spoiler!

So Dane I owe you an apology.

It has to be a player who's contract has expired and is signing a new 1 year contract with the team. It can be split between 2 players so one player signing a deal can use up part of it and you can use the rest on another player who is resigning a 1 year deal.

And it's the amount over the minimum active/inactive list salary for a player with the same amount of accrued seasons. So the minimum will still count against the cap, it's the first 1.25 mil above that amount that is waived from the cap.

So Sherman IS kind of free as hes the first (and likely only, but I think robinson would also work) player who's contract was up that also had 4 seasons with the team.

I actually added some more "clarity" in my post about this. Confusing as shit really.

But it seems as if it's a way to get a guy like sherman an extra 1.25 mil. So instead of signing him to the minimum salary (or slightly above) if hes the only guy with 4 years with the squad willing to resign to a 1 year deal we can give him an extra 1.25 mil that only affects Clark hunt and his cash flow.

He's a Pro Bowl fullback, got the block that sealed the Super Bowl and is one of the best special teamers in the NFL. Quality individual. His family is settled here in KC and when he retires he could have a career in coaching like Vrabel or Manusky. This is a chemistry guy who has an important role in the big picture. We're lucky to have him.

Either Pete Sweeney doesn't understand the VSB or the public information hasn't been crystalized just yet because he's reporting that the Chiefs have already used it multiple times, something I suggested weeks ago based on Mike Florio and Albert Breer's reporting, which has been somewhat debunked by other articles:

https://www.arrowheadpride.com/2020/...-the-offseason

Under the old CBA, a player like Robinson — who has been a reliable contributor to the team, but hasn’t put up enough numbers to be an attractive signing for another team — would often slip through the cracks of free agency and find themselves on the street. But using this VSB expansion, the Chiefs were able to sign him a one-year deal worth $2.3 million that counts just $1.05 million against the salary cap.

Essentially, this part of the new CBA gives Robinson the bonus he deserves for being a consistent, solid contributor — and the team another opportunity to capitalize on their four-year investment at a minimal cost.

And Robinson’s contract isn’t the only one that takes advantage of the CBA’s VSB provisions.

The contracts were given to newly-signed cornerback Antonio Hamilton and offensive lineman Mike Remmers — and the one given to defensive tackle Mike Pennel when he was re-signed last week — all used the other variation of the CBA’s VSB.

This provision allows a player with at least four accrued seasons (for any team) to be given a one-year contract paying them the NFL minimum salary according to their experience, but carry the cap hit of a player with only two years of experience. Both variations of the VSB also allow these players to be paid signing bonuses of up to $137,500, which count against the cap as they normally would.

You may recall that in 2019, the Chiefs used the old CBA’s minimum salary benefit to sign fullback Anthony Sherman to a one-year contract worth $1.02 million that carried a cap hit of just $735,000. While we don’t yet know all the parameters of the one-year deal the Chiefs gave Sherman last week, it’s a virtual certainty that it will also be a VSB deal.

If that’s true, it means that aside from the exclusive rights free agent contracts given to tight end Deon Yelder and guard Andrew Wylie — each of which are minimum-salary deals carrying cap hits of only $750,000 — every contract the Chiefs have given to veteran free agents has used the VSB of the new CBA. All told, seven players have been signed to one-year veteran free-agent contracts totaling $8.3 million — but that count only $6.1 million against the cap.

To be sure, VSB contracts carry a built-in disadvantage: they can only be used for one-year agreements; therefore they do nothing to improve the roster over the long term.

But aside from the money teams can save against the salary cap in the current season, they carry another big advantage: under Article 10 in Appendix V of the new CBA, players signed to VSB contracts do not count in the NFL’s compensatory picks formula. Even if any of the team’s VSB players have fantastic seasons in 2020, their signings won’t hinder the Chiefs from gaining compensatory picks in the 2021 NFL Draft because of players they lost in free agency this year.

Great write up.

And this is why you want a GM like Brett Veach not John Dorsey.

Huge advantage to the Chiefs to be able to keep guys like Sherman, Robinson, and Pennel. I love one year deals, and frankly this is great for the players too because it allows them to stick around in the league a little longer.

Yes, it is the section immediately above what I referenced before. It's all part of the Veteran Salary Benefit article. Pretty sure matt moore was signed using the old version last year as his cap hit was less than his salary.

The new version doesnt say anything about a limit on the number of uses as far as I can tell.
