Brett Veach prioritizing re-signing Chris Jones, L'Jarius Sneed

What some of us have been wondering...

Quote:
HENDERSON, Nev. -- Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said he is aware of the challenge the organization faces in re-signing both defensive tackle Chris Jones and cornerback L'Jarius Sneed but said it would be an offseason priority to get both players under new contracts.

"Sometimes I look at our situation and I'm like, 'I don't know how we're going to do this,' but we usually work through things systematically and have a list of the priorities,'' Veach said as the Chiefs continued preparations for Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers. "Certainly, Chris and LJ are at the top of the list.

"It's extremely hard because you have two keystone players there.''

Jones, 29, has been one of the NFL's top pass-rushers for years. He had 10.5 sacks this season to tie for the team lead after missing training camp and the first regular-season game while holding out for a new contract.

He didn't get the extension he was looking for, but the Chiefs sweetened the final season of his existing contract.

"It was important for us to mend the fences with Chris because we love him and he's an iconic player here, not just here, but I mean of all time,'' Veach said. "That was important for us, and we'll continue to work hard and see if we can get something done, but it will be a priority for us.''

The Chiefs used Sneed, 27, this season to defend against the opponent's top receiver much of the time, and none had big games against him.

Jones and Sneed are key players for an improved Chiefs defense that allowed fewer points than all but one other team during the regular season and held the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens to 41 total points in the playoffs.

The Chiefs had defenses that were at times competitive since Patrick Mahomes became their starting quarterback in 2018, but rarely were they consistently so. Veach and the Chiefs found the task of building a top defense difficult because the past few seasons they were carrying Mahomes' massive contract.

"I still remember in '17 and '18 just saying if we can just get them to punt just once we've got a shot,'' Veach said. "Now all of a sudden it's like all we've got to do is just score once and we're good.

"Going from where we were in '17 and '18 to having one of the best defenses, knowing the constraints we had of just paying [Mahomes] and probably drafting later [in rounds], I don't think I ever envisioned having a top one or two defense.''

As far as Jones goes, not even bothering unless he fires those two dumb shits he employs as agents. Already been offered a more than fair deal last off season and Jones and his dynamic douchebag duo chose to publicly make assclowns of themselves as we lost our home opener. **** em. Tag him if we want one more year, or don't.

Of course he'd listen - like I said, if the Bears call offering 9, Veach would have to work damn hard to contain his glee in accepting.

He'll listen on anyone but Mahomes (and probably Kelce). But that doesn't mean anything is remotely likely. Because ultimately I still think there's a disconnect between his value to us and his value anywhere else.

I don't think anyone is likely to get as much out of him as Spags has been able to. He's more valuable in KC than he is for any other franchise in football. And those teams that can come close are contenders that really don't want to be doing anything to clean our cap up or get more talent sent our way.

If you're the Lions and could get Sneed in there to lock down Aiyuk next time you're playing SF in the post-season, you'd LOVE to have the guy. But do you want to help out KC? Eh...probably note.

So the deals aren't going to be what we'd like them to be. And so I don't think a deal's going to eventually get made.

I agree. I don’t think the decision to trade even gets thought about unless Jones is signed and therefore eating up all that cap space.

I think Chris Jones is this generation's version of Buck Buchanan, and Sneed is this generations version of Emmitt Thomas. You just can't replace guys like that. And I think they'll move Thuney to tackle and let Allegretti start at guard. He's got three rings, and earned it.

I’m always a big fan of trading players for picks. Younger and cheaper is a good thing. You just have to get fair comp for the player.

That said, hard to picture a trade partner for Sneed.

A bad team with picks and cap space would probably need to keep the picks and cap space to address multiple positions.

A good team is probably in a tough cap position and needs to stay cheap where possible. Unless a team sees Sneed as THE piece to put them over the top, I can’t see one making an offer (at least not an offer we would take).

Funny you mention that.

I was spitballing ideas about the OL with a buddy over the weekend.

With some of the speculation about moving Creed to guard, you could just shift Thuney to LT and Creed to LG. Then draft or sign a center. Keeps Morris on the bench for another year. Finding a center would probably be easier/cheaper than a LT.

We’ve won back to back Super Bowls with pretty average LT play. Have to think Thuney would be at least that good.

I’m sure that’s just Chief Fan Madden GM speculation though.

I would be very surprised if they use the franchise tag on Chris Jones with a cap hit above $30 million. It makes way more sense to do a franchise tag with LJ Sneed, cap hit around $18-19 million.

We won a SB with Austin Reiter at C and he's on our practice squad.

Both great players but not interested in signing both if it means we can't have an elite offense.

Mahomes is not enough to have an elite offense.

Last year we did not have an elite offense.

There is no reason not to have an elite offense when you start with

Mahomes
Kelce

Anyone soured on this WR FA class?

Higgins and Pittman will absolutely be tagged. Riddley had 6 drops and quit on plays from what I'm seeing from Jags fans on Twitter.

Mike Evans is awesome but I wouldn't overpay. He's old as hell and if he wants a bag than a team will far outspend us for his services. I like Hollywood Brown but I'm not spending $15 million on his ass. No way.

Feels like a great year to look for a Juju type guy/deal. Lockett and Boyd fit that so well and will likely be fair priced.

Chris and Sneed are 2 of the best FA's this year. I'd do what I could to keep them and get a stud WR in the 1st rd ideally.
