2019 Free agency Thread
We don't really have one of these yet, so figured we could use this as a place to discuss potential free agent acquisitions and what we would like to look for them to bring in.
If any of you guys are interested, heres a good place to do some research. https://overthecap.com/ |

By the way, Chris Jones' natural ability can be disruptive absent of technique.
Given Tanoh's physical gifts and his body type, he's going to HAVE to develop techniques that he, to this point, has not shown he has. There's really no comparison between the two. Compare Tanoh to Ford for example and you'll see why Tanoh needs to learn whereas Dee Ford's first step was enough. |

But as you noted, nobody has ever taught him how. In large part due to the ill-fated idea that he could be a standup linebacker. I think it's worthwhile to make an effort at teaching him how to win at a position that may actually be viable for him. Do I harbor any illusions that it will work out well? Lord no, and with the Okafor signing its clear the Chiefs don't either. But he does have some explosion in those legs and very good raw strength/length that could be put to good use if anyone would ever both teaching him what he needs to know to be successful. There has been some serious mismanagement of his career to this point.

I think Houston legit was an asshole and that’s why they released him. A. Because they are trying to change the attitude and culture on this D. And B. His contract was ridiculous. Veach said “Berry/ Houston you guys aren’t living up to the massive payday we gave you that we did right by you on. You guys think you can restructure/take a pay cut to help us win a SB we’d love to have you.” Berry/Houston- “ nah we’re good.” Veach said ok lol byeeeee. I get it they want the money on their deals but you can’t be a shit bag and expect that salary. The truth will be revealed when they go play for other teams for way less money. They just didn’t want to be hear. **** em. |

I think it's easy to mistake pride for anger.
I don't think Houston was an asshole or a miscreant. But I think that's as proud a man as you'll find in this game. And when someone comes for your money, like it or not, admit it or not, that's a shot to your pride and someone like Houston won't take that lightly. I wouldn't mind bringing him back at the right price point. I wouldn't mind letting him go either (people are really understating how ineffective he was in the run game last year after years of being dominant in that regard). When a players strengths start to slip, the walls not far away. Houston probably has another season left in him but seeing him fall off against the run like he did also made me wonder if he's not just teetering on the brink of completely ineffective.

Physically speaking (and only, I'm not comparing production) he's almost exactly Strahan, who flourished under Spagnuolo. comparing him to Ford is apples-to-oranges as Ford's first step is lightning fast; in fact, you could pretty much tell by that first step whether it was to be a sack/hurry or he'd get stonewalled. It was pretty much his only real weapon and he either won the snap quick or lost it. Ford is elite, but at ONE thing, which is why I didn't mind moving on at all. Keep in mind as we build this defense what Reid said last year- The future of defense in the NFL is inside pressure; quickest route to the QB. "EDGE" rusher is not really the focus; look at where our league leading sack total got us. It's forcing the ball out fast from inside, creating turnovers, incompletions, punts, and yes, sacks. Lots of 'A' and 'B' gap blitzes along with a strong front 4. in draft or FA, 260lbs plus for a DE-so that you can go lighter and faster at LB, swarm to the ball, cover backs and slot receivers. Beef up front, speed in the back 7. |

I think the Chiefs learn this year what they got in Kpassa. Daly made pretty good DLs in NE with mostly no name players so having a stud (Jones) and Okafor and Nnadi being above average you can argue that Daly's got more to work with here that what BB ever gave him at NE.

Dee Ford didn't need any coaching. He had a DT-like first step. If you watch Dee Ford play, you'll notice he hasn't developed any significantly different techniques. He's just beating guys off the snap. KPass can't do that. The OLB coaching issue has been masked by having two guys in Houston and Ford that didn't need coaching to excel. Kind of like Bob Sutton's issues being covered up by Berry, Poe, and Houston in their prime. |

KPass has a lot of work to do to even contribute, let alone excel. I'm not sure why you'd compare him to Strahan - he's considerably larger than Strahan. |
