Maui Wildfires

Maui is burning...

Current photo of "Haleakala" (that road is the start of the "Road to Hana").

Smoke blowing across the landscape as cars pass by on a highway

There's housing all up and down that side of the mountain and it's immensely sketchy right now. Even Kihei is in danger (south central). Prayers to the locals and anyone who's trapped in this hellscape. Seemed as if the high winds caught them off guard. But beyond the loss of life of the worlds coolest tree (Banyan tree the size of a city block) is probably gone now (https://lahainarestoration.org/lahaina-banyan-tree/).

Up to date map of the wildfire:

I hope everyone doesn't rush to one side and tip the island over.

(I hope I'm not the only one who remembers that congressman.)

Prayers to all of the families, I'm hoping all of the Hawaii Cp'ers are okay! This is just awful, I apologize for just now making it to the thread.

That makes sense. I guess they could only do so much so fast with the speed the fire spread.

Happens semi-frequently. A few years ago a wildfire in that same area of the island burned through 10K acres.

Rather amazing. And kudos to the airlines who have dedicated aircraft to evacuating people from the island.

This is fairly shocking to me being that I gave up watching almost all news about a year ago. I had assumed it was a lava flow or eruption that started it.

I haven't heard anything about that big row of hotels that's north of Lahaina. Have those been hit, or are they out of the fire's way?

Are you thinking of Kaanapali? That’s pretty much the most hotel populated part of the island. From what I am hearing, most of the hotels there are ok.

Yeah, there.

I was assuming that those areas were probably okay since I hadn't heard anything, but then again I haven't been following that closely. Those are some pretty big hotels and they're not far away from Lahaina.

I’ve been tracking it as closely as I can. Spent tons of time in Kaanapali as a kid and got married there in 2006. Losing Lahaina is bad enough. I’m glad Kaanapali seems to have been spared, for the most part.

Yep. Im about 10 - 15 miles away in Kapalua. Been pretty much locked down and made evacuation plans in case it had tracked this way. At night I could see the orange glow in the sky and haze in the day. Strong winds kept the smoke away from where I am.They have most of Hwy 30 south closed with road blocks so no getting near the area, even if you have a reason to be there. Lahaina is completely destroyed. Cant believe the total devastation. What a surreal experience. No words, just prayers.

Good Lord 80 dead 1500+- still missing

Someone needs on the hotseat for not having proper wild fire fighting available. I read experts had been warning about this scenario happening for years and it was kicked down the road.
