New overtime rules: Playoffs

i have rethought this whole thing:

in overtime in the playoffs, simply make the offense play defensive positions, and the defense must play offense.

in this scenario, the chiefs would have gotten the ball back and eric berry wouldn't have had to run around, he could just be the qb

Actually, you don't need a coin flip. Each team independently tells the ref a yard line. Whoever is further back starts on offense.

So if one team chooses the 5 yard line and the other chooses the 8 yard line. The team choosing the 5 yard line starts on the 5. You only need a coin flip if they both choose the same yard line.

Just do my system - seriously. It (almost) guarantees each team gets to touch the ball w/o extending the game.

Overtime in the playoffs should mirror the regular periods (like the NBA or MLB). Each team should at the very least get a possession. Yes, we should have stopped them, but that isn't the point. Both offenses should at least get an opportunity.

This is not just about the Chiefs game...We had a Super Bowl that was decided by a coin flip.

The more scoring there is in the league, the more this makes sense. When you have teams scoring in the 30's and 40's the value of one touchdown as a decider is diminished as a determining factor.

For those lobbying for each team gets a possession and then it's sudden death. That's the same thing as the current OT rules are except you've prolonged it. The point of OT is to get a winner, not endlessly extend the game.

The current rules are actually pretty fair.

The team that has the ball 2nd has the advantage of knowing if they need to play 4 down football. They know they can throw it short on 3rd down knowing they have the extra down. The extra down is a tremendous advantage.

The team that has the ball 1st is disadvantaged because they will be playing 3 down football and punt for field position. There will be more pressure on them. To balance this is out they're rewarded with the win if they score a TD.

But don't worry, you guys who want that nonsense will get it. Why?

1. Everyone hates the Patriots, especially the jealous owners. So change the rules needlessly to try to stop them...

2. Saints/Rams Defensive pass interference non-call shit show is going to be on the news all off-season. What's the best way to get people to forget about that? To put something else on the news! Barring another scandal in the NFL they will change the OT rules just to get people to move on from this. Not because it's the right thing to do.

That's the NFL for you, all about image, and being reactive. What a terrible league.

How is making it closer to the regulation time rules more stupid? That makes no sense.

They aren't changing it because of the Patriots, they just happened to have benefited from this stupid rule.

The idea of rules is to create a level playing field as best you can. Saying that the game is over without one side getting the chance to score is not a fair system. In basketball you can't just run the clock for ever now. Was that rule change more stupid, or more fair?

Imagine changing extra inning baseball to a coin flip and whoever scores first wins.

These rules were set up when it was HARDER to score. Offense has been on the rise, it makes sense to make sure the talent on both teams have equal opportunity to score.

Sure if a team's defense failed to stop an offense from scoring a touchdown maybe they deserve to lose, because it is their fault. But shouldn't the other defense who never had to defend deserve a chance to show whether they can get a stop as well?

I don't know if your response is for college rules or the "each team gets a possession and then sudden death if still tied" but I feel like I've addressed that in my post above.

I will acknowledge that the game is favoring offense too much now. Blame Bill Polian for that. He's the one who started this nonsense because his soft as shit receivers were getting man handled by Patriots DB's in the 2003 AFC Champ game. This 5 yard jam rule is all Polian's fault. So send him a lot of hate mail.

So why not remove that rule now? Well because assholes like Bob Kraft and Jerry Jones have invested in gambling fantasy football operations like draftheads and duelkings, or whatever the **** it's called. So offensive football is here to stay. All thanks to those 3 assholes and fantasy football.

12 minute clock with 4th quarter timing rules but extra points are not allowed. You score a TD and you must go for the two point conversion.

Score still tied after 10? The first safety or TD wins in sudden death and both teams get a guaranteed possession from their own 30. If the score is still tied after both teams possess the ball, then it's sudden death with the first team to possess getting the ball at their own 40. Repeat possessions if still tied with the ball moving up 10 yards until some slapdick kicker makes one the opponent cannot since someone has to win, I guess.

First, the team going 2nd has the advantage, 4 down football.

So switch it up so the teams rotate who gets first possession for each OT. Well the team who went 2nd is now going 1st for the 2nd OT sequence.

So now the other teams's D has to defend against an offense that just drove down the field, again? A defense that will be gassed? They're ****ed! Meanwhile the other team's D will be well rested to stop 4 down football.

The team that wins the coin toss in that example will always choose to go 2nd in the 1st OT sequence and will most likely win the game every time.

As for that 10 extra minutes of play? You needlessly prolonged the game, man!
