Star Wars Rogue One Spoiler Thread

There's quite a bit of info trickling out so its probably time to start a spoiler thread. I'll update with a trailer when it's available.

Trailer #1. This looks amazing!!! Darth Vader, The Emperor, Jyn (Rey's mother?), Forrest Whitaker, Donnie Yen and Alan Tudyk.

That said, I don't think the story could have been told without Tarkin and IMO, heavy prosthetics would have been far less believable.

As for the future, I can't really speculate. A huge portion of the Rogue One budget was the post production Visual Effects, much of which was approved after the first screening.

Since very few films have a $200 million dollar budget, I don't think it makes much sense to worry about future films employing that technology to bring dead actors back to life. I suspect that by the time that technology is affordable, seamless and even more convincing, most of the public that would clamor for such characters would be long past interested in seeing a dead actor on the screen.

Tarkin was a little different because he didn't do much but stand around and act evil and Leia just basically turned around and said one word. I think that VFX would be more convincing than some voice actor attempting to emulate a John Wayne in ADR, so at this point in time, I don't expect it to become prominent.
Thanks!

We went to a Holiday party last night and I spoke with some people closely associated with the production.

Ben Mendelsohn's role was initially much, much larger. Tarkin was barely in the original screenplay and there was no Princess Leia in Gary Whitta's original script.

Krennic was originally a Grand Admiral (hence the uniform) and he was Tarkin and even Vader's superior. As has been previously reported, Jyn & Cassian Andor survived the end of the film and Jyn's role was also much larger.

From my understanding, Mendolsohn and Felicity Jones were initially disappointed with their reduced roles (Whitaker had a larger role, too, but he was magnanimous about it). There wasn't any "bad blood", just disappointment. Mendolsohn thought this would be his "huge break" into American cinema but with a largely reduced role, that remains to be seen.

Awesome.

After seeing it a second time and reading your post, it certainly feels like Krennic should have had a bit of an expanded role in the movie. He was a large, forceful personality capable of going toe to toe with Tarkin. It's a shame he didn't get more screen time. I think Mendolsohn and Felicity both knocked their roles out of the park.

They were responsible for recovering the plans to the ROTJ death star, not the ones for ANH.

This is why there should have been a crawl/scroll at the beginning of the movie explaining Galen Erso's role and relationship with the Empire and "the evil" Krennic, while giving Jyn's backstory.
It would have shaved off at least a half hour of the plodding intro that could have been used to feature the Krennic and Jyn pieces that ended up on the cutting room floor.

Sounds like Krennic's role was lessened in favor of CGI. An introductory crawl would not have changed that. As for Jyn, I thought she had plenty of screen time. Maybe it's just me, but I enjoyed the intro. A crawl is nice to set up basic stuff, but you don't get that human emotion watching people as they watch their loved ones die.

Didn't care much for the character, but he nails what I find is so unsatisfying about this movie.
