Maui Wildfires

Maui is burning...

Current photo of "Haleakala" (that road is the start of the "Road to Hana").

Smoke blowing across the landscape as cars pass by on a highway

There's housing all up and down that side of the mountain and it's immensely sketchy right now. Even Kihei is in danger (south central). Prayers to the locals and anyone who's trapped in this hellscape. Seemed as if the high winds caught them off guard. But beyond the loss of life of the worlds coolest tree (Banyan tree the size of a city block) is probably gone now (https://lahainarestoration.org/lahaina-banyan-tree/).

Up to date map of the wildfire:

Again, just stop.

Sounds like it flared back up.

https://www.mauicounty.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=12622

Evacuations were ordered at 6:40 a.m. in the area surrounding Lahaina Intermediate School. There were two people at the Lahaina Civic Center evacuation shelter as of 8:50 a.m.

Yes, 36 people are dead so far and you're already on a rant about THE GUBMINT. Like I said, what the **** is wrong with you?

Evacuating from the Florida Keys is a shitshow before the threat of a major hurricane… one main highway in/out and a small airport… and that is WITH much more advanced notice.

Trying to evacuate quickly with a rapidly developing disaster from an island… it’s a challenge.

Not hard to understand… JFC.

Its not even comparable. The West Side of the island is not big at all. I've been all over it. I would understand the people passing if it was on the East Side of the island but not the West. And I am knowledgeable this fire is taking place on the WET side of the island. They must have had a no rain recently.

You're thinking of the wrong island. People do cliff diving and jungle hikes on the East side. It's world-famous for being a tropical oasis (see Road to Hana). Even in the southern parts of the end side you get more rain (Wailea). The south west is dry as ****. Believe me.

But to your point, let's say you're right about the evacuation call. Maui County ****ed up. They were worried about calling a wholesale evacutation because that highway get's jammed up on good days and they didn't want a firestorm to descend upon a traffic jam (which at points hugs a cliff side) so they held off calling the evacuation until it was too late. Are they the bad guys? Or is it the piece of shit cooking fish during 60+ MPH winds on a red-flag day? Who should live the rest of their lives with the guilt? Keep in mind this town is packed with families that have young children. Now's not the time to point fingers.

Fair,

But man it just feels like the amount of resources they could have brought in sooner. I get the not causing a panic bit but meh.

And I know the West side, I've zip lined down the entire face of the mountain on the head. The East side I'd understand because the Road to Hana is ****ing crazy.

But the West side of the island does have good highways.

It was moving so fast, people were jumping into the ocean to escape the flames.

There really wasn't a lot of time unfortunately.

I do wonder what could've been done with the fireboats. They have to have several at Pearl, right?

Those water cannons can launch about 500 feet. Obviously that won't get you inland very far. I wonder if the beaches are just really shallow around there so they couldn't get anything in close enough to really make a difference.

Or maybe they just don't use those anymore.
